  • Comments Thread For: Usyk vs. Joyce Clash is Being Discussed, Says Frank Warren

Frank Warren, promoter for Olympic silver medal winner Joe Joyce, reveals that there are ongoing discussions to make a fight with Oleksandr Usyk - in what would be a clash for the interim-WBO heavyweight title. Usyk is the mandatory challenger to the WBO title. Joyce is sitting in the number 2 position within the WBO's rankings.

Why would Usyk have to fight Joyce for an interim title when he's mandatory?

So basically they're saying that because Fury/Joshua will be a two fight deal, the winner of the first fight will be undisputed for ten ****ing seconds until they get stripped of the belt, and the interim champ gets promoted.

        Corrupt as all hell

How ****** does this arrangement sound? Why would AU step aside and fight for an interim belt when he is already the mando to AJ and can fight for 3 belts at the same time?

So the WBO is going down the WBC route of having a bunch of belts and titles now huh. Not surprised. But honestly the fans want undisputed Anthony-Joshua needs to happen. The idea of Usyk jumping the line and being able to force all this and have all this power at heavyweight because of being a cruiserweight champ never sat well with me anyway. Even if the Chisora fight was an eliminator by the way it shouldnt have been. Usyk-Joyce is a good fight though. Maybe put it on the undercard

Because he at least has a hope of beating Joyce.

Usyk vs Chisora wasn’t an elimination bout it was a voluntary one by Usyk .

No ones forcing this on Usyk ,if the fight happens Usyk has to agree to it they can’t take him off his mandatory spot he holds . If Usyk can get a belt of any kind going into the Joshua fight it’s a far bigger payday . Both have to win but I’m looking at Joyce vs A.J as the possible outcome,I would be a little surprised if Usyk agrees to it .

I guess if it wasn't a fight for Undisputed then WBO would just strip Joshua beforehand, instead they'll want a piece of the pie and marketing an undisputed fight is so much bigger.

If Usyk gets a wad of step-aside cash, and also fights Joyce, also probably for solid money, he comes out on top in terms of cash, especially if he beats Joyce and keeps his mandatory position for the WBO belt intact - being in line to fight Joshua right now is lucrative as it is, being in line to fight Joshua or Fury after they've unified is probably lucrative in the same way winning the Mayweather sweepstakes used to be. Beating Joyce, who's a giant heavyweight, also helps give his HW credentials a shot in the arm - and he's capable of it, he did it once in the amateurs. It's a good opportunity for Usyk to really cash in while letting the fight everyone wants to see happen. I hope it actually works out this way.
