I'm said it to illustrate that tape over gauge changes the characteristic of the wrappings. If it didn't they would allow it on the knuckle portion of the hand wrap. I'm not saying Canelo or Pac taped over their knuckles.

If you are less at risk you can punch harder. It holds the wrist in place so it doesn't flex as much on impact. If the wrist doesn't flex then more energy is transferred. If one fighter is stacking and the other isn't it's an advantage.
