I have to go with Mayweather on this one. there should be 4 Champions per weight class: WBC, WBA, IBF, and WBO! That's it! The should only be an interim Champion, when the Champion is vacant, and the interim champion should be fighting for the full title in their next fight! WBA is the WORST!!!

WBA working to reduce number of titles

The elimination of multiple world titles in the same division will not happen overnight. I get that but Mendoza has told me personally that he is going to reduce the number of titles. I will take him at his word until proven otherwise.

“I am working to reduce the titles,” Mendoza told me on Tuesday. “At first some promoters [might] complain. I just tell them it is my final decision. They would have to live with it.”

WBA Prez Admits It's Not Easy To Reduce The Number of Titles

While the criticisms have not stopped against the WBA over their path of having numerous champions per weight class - Mendoza says the incoming requests from promoters to approve various title fights have continued to pour in - with promoters indicating, in their requests, that a title will benefit their fighters and their televised event.

While Mendoza has spoken to rival sanctioning bodies about staging division-wide unification tournaments - the issue that comes up, is that certain promoters and/or champions are not interested in participating.

“They tell me that there must be only one champion, but they don't give me solid arguments. They tell me that [the titles] are devalued, but when we talk about making a tournament to set a single champion, not everyone wants to enter it. When we talk about accepting a champion versus champion fight - not everyone is willing to take part," Mendoza told ESPN Deportes...

According to the WBA's rankings, there are 39 champions in 17 divisions, including super champions, regular and interim champions.

I like to see an undisputed champion in each division, but it's hard to do nowadays with boxing politics. It's not simple like back in the old days.

NO! Why should the wba, wbc, ibf and wbo get to control who are champions. Who gives them that right. It's the people who want to see a guy with a "real" belt, I guess. But it's just a bunch of old guys in a back room determining who gets a title shot. BS. The more belts there are the more options fighters have to control their own careers and not have some old guy in another country preventing them from doing so. I'm starting my own sanctioning body it's called the WBS, and it's the BS the counts. Want to join?

I understand what Tyson is saying but don't entirely agree

He's saying they're marketing tools to generate interest in fights

But if you have just 1 champion, people will get hyped over title eliminators between good opponents, regional titles which will be more appealing and there should be more money for title contenders because it'll be a bigger fight. You can't defend against the WBO #12 that nobody has ever heard of because the divisions killers have eyes on your title.

We might also see less risk aversion because undefeated records will be harder to maintain as you can't go a soft route to world champion. So again, better fights, more money

I think the only merit to his point is more money to the fighter for fighting a guy nobody otherwise cares about

I'm much more a Tyson fan than Mayweather. But, I'm siding with Mayweather here. Each division should have 1 real champion, not 4. In some cases 3 "champs" in the same division from the same alphabet organization.

I'm all about fighters controlling their own careers, but I don't like 3 guys in one weight class, under one sanctioning body, all calling themselves "Champion!" For instance, who is Manny Pacquiao's mandatory? Who is Ugas' mandatory? Who is Jamal James' mandatory?
