Of course he has been training. Boxers that are dedicated train for the number 1 guy in around their division, even when they don’t have a fight booked.... For example everyone at HW who hasn’t got a fight booked would be training for Tyson Fury’s style right now.

That’s how it works in boxing. So whether smith was chosen or not, it doesn’t matter in the end. He would or should have been training for Canelo.

It’s not like Canelo plotted this or anything though, the circumstances were pretty much out of his control.

Callum Smith was mentioned as a potential Canelo opponent a long time ago so I'm sure he's been training with that possibility in mind. They were even negotiating a fight a few months ago.
