He carried the whole heavyweight scene at a time when it was regarded as the worst ever heavyweight era, he was young and exciting but had no genuine world class fighters to oppose him, so unfortunately we will never know how good he truly was because he only knocked out lesser class heavyweights.
He never had a career defining fight, he was small and was never comfortable against long range box punchers as proved by his fights with Tucker, Smith and most notably Douglas.
Unfortunately people make so many excuses for his failure against the true world class fighters he faced, he has been blown up into mythical status for knocking out average heavyweights.
For me his best win was against Ruddock and look what Lewis did to him.
You when someone knows **** all about boxing, it's when they say Mike Tyson is the greatest fighter ever or the greatest heavyweight of all time lol.

But what happened when world class boxers joined the ranks in the 90s? They knocked him out!

He's up there with Wilder as the most overrated of all time in the division. When a boxer starts "declining" at age 23 when there are no bums to spark out - you should know he's a hype job. Mike Tyson was a media creation by the networks who were looking for the next big thing after Ali retired. It's obvious his style won't work against any big puncher that can punch back and that's the same problem Loma is facing now and why Garcia will never beat anyone with a pulse. All the fancy crap is only effective against bums and average boxers. At the elite level - you'll get tested and found out.

The BS about Cus D'Amato is absolute nonsense. Boxers change trainers all the time. So how come Mike Tyson is the only boxer in history that became a bum because he wasn't with a particular trainer? Cus wasn't even there in the 80s when he was knocking out creampuffs but whimsically, the absence of Cus became a problem in the 90s when the division got stronger. Hilarious! LMAO

KO’s generate hype. Tyson had that run and also his personality. Then the fact that he was a heavyweight, the glamour division also added to making him one of the most known fighters of all time. The fact that he’s so known, garner’s him extra votes to this greatness that is probably overrated, yes.

Tyson is on too many top 10 ATG lists when he not a top 5 heavyweight
I see the argument that he gets overrated too often but at the same time he gets unfairly hated on by others.

Name one other ATG whose sole reason for keeping it together was taken from him at an early age. That’s why people use “what if’s” with Tyson. Because that’s all they got. That and some theories.

My theory is that a well trained, lightening fast, power in both fists knockout artist poses a threat to anyone. Didn’t say he’d beat everyone. Didn’t say he’s top 10. Just don’t think that D’Amato version of Tyson should be written off so easily.

I'm just saying.... Tyson the only fighter that gets ranked based off "what if"

But if we try to do that with other fighters it's automatically shut down. But since everyone loves Mike he gets the what if exception.

His best career win is past prime Holmes.

After prison, he lost to every world class fighter he faced. Lost to Holyfield twice, lost to Lewis.

This guy is getting too much reputation. He was Andre Berto of heavyweight division, but people still act like he was the second best heavyweight ever or something. The fact that he is actually the second most famous boxer ever just tells how ****** boxing casuals are.
His best win was Razor Ruddock. He was one dimensional and couldn't adjust in a fight.
