No asterisk in Teofimo’s undisputed title status
For those Devin Haney fans that are confused, Teofimo is the actual undisputed champion. Before putting out false narratives, Haney fans should look into what franchise really means. Lomachenko, the former franchise WBC champion, had to relinquish his “regular” WBC belt in order to become the franchise champion. He didn’t vacate it to avoid Devin Haney. The WBC president permits this title so that elite fighters can move across different weight classes without getting stripped of their belt. The franchise champion can also fight for other belts without needing to fight mandatories that can lengthen their approach for undisputed. Since Loma became the franchise champion, he did not have any mandatories. This gave him the chance to fight the Commey/Lopez winner without any roadblocks to become undisputed. The regular WBC belt was then handed to Haney who WAS the mandatory. The franchise title is a title, but the WBC approves if this person is worthy. Prior to the Loma fight, team Lopez came to an agreement with the WBC that if he beats Loma he comes the franchise belt holder. The franchise belt holder becomes the face of the division for the WBC. Lopez is considered the WBC champion because he was granted the belt after beating Loma. The WBC agreed that if Lopez were to beat Loma, he’s worthy to become the franchise champion. If one holds the WBC franchise championship along with the other belts, they are undisputed.Tags: None -
Obviously.
The simple fact there is more than one belt per division is a joke.
Let alone that the seperate belts have other belts.
The fact that you can be “upgraded” to world champion without actually winning the Title just shows the horrific state that Boxing is in.
Now you can be “upgraded” to “world champion” when someone else in the same division is actually the “franchise” champion.
It’s genuinely embarrassing. -
It is ridiculous and there should be better ways to go about this. A lot of unifications are prevented due to mandatories as well. Unifications should take priority over mandatories. The franchise belt confused a lot of fans and it took me a bit to piece it together. The WBC acknowledged the franchise title as a real title. If the franchise champion unifies all other belts, they are undisputed.Obviously.

ESPN is confused about this subject. The WBC president explained it here: https://********/3RGGn-9bpbw
He said it’s not transferable, but it is completely up to the WBC to grant the franchise title and team Lopez came to an agreement with the WBC to obtain it if they beat Loma.Comment

Burn all belts. Real fans know who is who. Belts are for casuals and fight selling mechanism. How can a real fan admire these crooked belts?Comment

Gotta do something to get one of these guys to fight him. Becoming the madatory didn't work. Might as well try shaming them

"A franchise champion shall enjoy special status with respect to his or her mandatory obligations, holding multiple titles and competing for titles of other organizations, as the WBC board of governors rules on a case-by-case basis."

They're making it up as they go and it seems like they're shutting certain fighters out and playing favoritism
But WBC changed rules midstream, which isn't cool. At least w/ wretched WBA you know where you stand ahead of time. Bottom line: @Realdevinhaney shoulda gotten vacant title fight vs Campbell or Loma-Camp winner. Loma wanted diff fight. OK. So no WBC belt. Can't have it both ways. https://t.co/9dTxPN4SU4

ESPN is not confused. The WBC is confused
When the WBC created the "franchise" title it was specifically announced it was not transferable. For #LomaLopez it was suddenly transferable. Here's the column I did when it was created: https://t.co/eUiKAL2f2X #boxing @Realdevinhaney https://t.co/ex5XL4YL4P

1. Allow the elite to move across different weight classes, so they can hold WBC belts in other weight classes simultaneously. To do this, the champion must relinquish their regular WBC title and then it gets handed to the mandatory or #1 ranked contender. Remember, if Sergio Martinez was franchise champion, the WBC would have recognized him as the 154 and 160 pound champion.
2. This allows the franchise champion to fight for other belts without being interrupted by mandatories to become undisputed. Loma exercised this right when he fought the Commey/Lopez winner.Comment

WBC announced the winner would be undisputed, so no asterisk next to Teo. Shame we have all these belts but fans or fighters won’t stop it. Is what it is as they say.Comment
