To do this, the champion must relinquish their regular WBC title and then it gets handed to the mandatory or #1 ranked contender. Remember, if Sergio Martinez was franchise champion, the WBC would have recognized him as the 154 and 160 pound champion.

    2. This allows the franchise champion to fight for other belts without being interrupted by mandatories to become undisputed. Loma exercised this right when he fought the Commey/Lopez winner.

When the WBC announced the franchise title or whatever you wanna call it they said it cannot be won or lost in the ring. The franchise title was BS from the beginning but because it couldn't be fought for I think most people accepted it as it is what it is.

Suddenly they change the most important rule right before this fight.

It wasn't on the line for Canelo vs Kovalev.

Cmon ya'll can't be ok with this. Is Teo the best lightweight in the division? Yes. But have some integrity about the situation. If Teo had requested the designation after he beat Loma and they gave it to him I wouldn't have a problem with it because that is what they said it would be for. But doing these 11th hour changes is not good and it's underhanded. From an integrity standpoint you can't be ok with this.

I’m not ok with the alphabet soup mess of title belts we have. WBC and WBA both pull this nonsense for more sanctioning fees. Problem is, it’s a shell game. They can get away with cooking the books on their rankings and mandatories and manipulating networks.

Prior to the fight WBC announces the winner will be undisputed as far as they are concerned. Who is going to stand up to them? The networks? The promoters? All they care about is money and ratings.

This was a way for the WBC to get the most marketable fighter to represent their brand. That’s why they elect if the WBC champ gets franchise status. The catch is that the champ has to drop their regular belt in exchange. It is because Loma dropped the regular belt, that he was granted this franchise title to unify or move up or down in weight without mandatory interruptions. The franchise title can not be transferred, but the organization can grant this based on accomplishments. They agreed to grant Lopez the franchise title, so he is undisputed.

The WBC president permits this title so that elite fighters can move across different weight classes without getting stripped of their belt. The franchise champion can also fight for other belts without needing to fight mandatories that can lengthen their approach for undisputed. Since Loma became the franchise champion, he did not have any mandatories. This gave him the chance to fight the Commey/Lopez winner without any roadblocks to become undisputed. The regular WBC belt was then handed to Haney who WAS the mandatory. The franchise title is a title, but the WBC approves if this person is worthy. Prior to the Loma fight, team Lopez came to an agreement with the WBC that if he beats Loma he comes the franchise belt holder. The franchise belt holder becomes the face of the division for the WBC. Lopez is considered the WBC champion because he was granted the belt after beating Loma. The WBC agreed that if Lopez were to beat Loma, he’s worthy to become the franchise champion. If one holds the WBC franchise championship along with the other belts, they are undisputed.
I dunno man Haney’s dominant win over Gmail was damn impressive.

The belts don’t mean sh** anyway. Lopez is now undisputedly “the man” at 135. The king of the hill as Lennox would say.

The WBA Super is nothing like the franchise champion. You don't have to petition to become WBA super champion when you're fighting the WBA super champion. All you gotta do is beat him. There are also WBA champions in every single weight divisions. Not true for the Franchise champion. This seems like they're playing favorites and only allowing certain guys to fight for this title. Going from "this designation is for a WBC champion (teo has never had the wbc belt) who has shown he will fight the best in multiple weight classes and represents the WBC well in the community" to "it can be transferred" That's taking away the whole point of the original reason they created it

But that's not what it was created for. They specifically created it so their WBC champion can fight the best fights without being tied to mandatory fights. Ok cool. But it's not supposed to be transferred. Now that its transferable what they've done is created a belt that only certain fighters can fight for. The original reason was also the fighter had to be a WBC champion. Devin has been the WBC intercontinental champ, interim champ, and full champ. Prior to Loma winning the vacant title he had never been a WBC champ. He nor Teo came up thru the WBC system.

They did it for Canelo too...also created a Money Belt for Floyd to put on the line for McGregor to charge sanctioning fees without risking the real titles. It’s all bullshyt.

Under Rule 3.26, in its discretion, the WBC may, upon a 2/3rd vote of the Board of Governors, designate in each weight category one WBC Franchise Champion. A Franchise Champion shall enjoy special status with respect to his or her mandatory obligations, holding multiple titles and competing for titles of other organizations, as the WBC Board of Governors rules on a case-by-case basis.

“The WBC is bestowing that honor upon champion Alvarez due to his many accomplishments which have positioned him as major worldwide attraction in boxing, and in light of his unquestionable boxing career linked to our organization. Canelo Alvarez has represented the WBC for 11 years with outstanding results in his professional career.”

When Floyd Mayweather fought Conor McGregor, the WBC issued the Money Belt, which was a special belt as it was a novelty. Mayweather’s actual WBC welterweight title, as well as his WBA (Super), The Ring and lineal titles, were not on the line.

For the recent Canelo Alvarez vs. Daniel Jacobs bout, the WBC issued the Mayan belt. Again it was a novelty to commemorate the Cinco de Mayo weekend the fight fell within.

The belts have always been looked at as a differentiator between the other sanctioning bodies and the WBC. Their green belt is the most coveted prize in boxing and, as such, there is a respect to uphold.

With the new “franchise champion” status of Canelo, for many, the WBC has taken the ultimate step towards eroding the very respect the organization garners.

It’s not transferable, but the WBC has to vote if someone puts a claim for it. Team Lopez put a claim and asked if they beat Loma, would that be enough to become franchise and they agreed. When Loma became franchise champion, he had no mandatories, so the regular belt went to Haney. Had Loma never gotten the franchise status, he would’ve had to fight Haney or pay a fine to unify with Lopez first. If the franchise never occurred, we would have had to wait until next year to get a unified champion.
