Because he's a young bull who's enamored with the press he is receiving.

He is going in against a kid who is a natural middleweight fighting at Welter.
Factor in the size and age difference, plus the quick beating he took at the hands of a rusty Kostya and I'm surprised the odds aren't more tilted.
i agree he should be a big favorite, but if he would have fought mitchell instead of mattyse in the first place he would have been an underdog most likely. just based on one performance he is now considered almost a lock.

my point was moreso that people underestimated him in the first place and nothing he did last time should get anyone thinking he can beat the champ.

I don't wanna take anything away from Williams 'cause he did look good against Matthyse. But, it looks to me like this guy's main asset is his work rate. He throws over a 100 punches per round which leaves his tall lanky frame wide open for body and head counters. Mitchell fight will be a huge step up as Mitchell counters very well. williams took way too many shots from Matthyse, Matthyse was dead after the 3rd rd, you could see his punches come from a mile away, still, Williams wasn't able to slip much, other than back away and come back in. Mitchell is way faster and fights all twelve rounds if necessary. If you take a look at Williams record, you'll notice he's fought bum after bum, Matthyse was the best by far he's ever fought. Now he's fighting an over the hill, yet experienced guy. After this fight we should be able to tell if Williams has a shot at becoming a champ, remember, he has 30 fights and still no title shots or hasn't fought anyone in the top 10.

he is example of how little a lot of people watch boxing, and how much time they spend reading the hype.

paul williams is a classic case of a guy who went from being underrated to being grossly overrated all in the course of one fight.

he was a slight favorite to beat walter mattyse, almost a pick em fight between two undefeated prospects, people said williams hadnt fought anyone good and didnt know if he could take a shot... seemingly he answered those questions with an impressive fight.

people are having a natural reaction to this guy, he is a prototypical weterweight, his size and southpaw style make him a matchup problem for almost anyone and therefore an intriguing prospect in a jam packed division. he throws over 100 punches a round, something people just love to point out, but doesent seem to have that one punch to take a guy out. i dont think margarito is having nightmares about this guy but im sure he is thinking to himself "why do i gotta be the one?" cause surely none of the other champions are looking to fight paul williams themselves. paul williams doesent play much defense and i dont think he could beat margarito personally. its a bad match for williams cause his game is to wear the other guy down with constant pounding, and i dont think he can beat margarito at it quite yet.

hes a 4-1 favorite to beat sharmba mitchell now, after being pick em for mattyhse, which shows you a lot of people have jumped on the bandwagon. he should win the fight easily, no matter the odds, and if he doesent it should set off an alarm, i think he should have one more fight before margarito.

                  knives says cintron > williams

i say let em fight, that would be a good meaningful matchup
I was going to agree with this post if you were talking about Lacy a year ago, I thought Lacy was being overrated at the time people were overrating him.

The difference I see with Williams and Lacy is, Williams has a good jab, he can easily throw 100 punches per round, he can take a good punch, he's pretty fast, he has great stamina, he's pretty damn big for his weight, also he shows some boxing skills which will get better with every fight.

Also I really don't see many people talk about Williams, I really don't see him being overrated that much at this time.

The man I see being overrated is the man that is ducking williams.

if williams beats mitchell it won't mean ****

mitchell's knees are shot as his mobility is severely depressed theses days

his chin is weak and when he trades he's meat

it's a step up in class for williams sure, mitchell is a former champ with experience

but his best days are distant memories

                      i expect williams to win

but if you polish a turd all that you have is shiny ****
