So Charlo clearly beat Sergei...

What did I miss? He had bad swelling over one eye and a OK size cut on the other? He is a guy that marks up on the eyes, it is what it is. That's not how you score fights.
By that logic, GGG dominated Derevy (which he didn't) and dominated Jacobs (which wouldn't be the right word for that fight either).
This is him after GGG and he certainly didn't get dominated in that fight eitherComment

I didn’t watch either of those fights. I watched this one and he got his ass beat. He was rocked multiple times and got busted up really bad. You can minimize Jermalls performance if you want. It’s your prerogative. What did I miss? He had bad swelling over one eye and a OK size cut on the other? He is a guy that marks up on the eyes, it is what it is. That's not how you score fights.

It's a fight. Guys get punched. You score the punches for each guy. You then score the rounds as you see those punches unfold. Derevy had a really rough fight but so did Charlo. And at the end of it I felt Derevy won more rounds. He may have taken more damage but it was relatively close there.Comment

It was close. I had it one round for Derev but it could have gone either way. Lots of close rounds. Not mad at the decision.Originally posted by TheGR8TESTOATwas it close or a gift? I missed the fight fam.
I saw the other Charlo stoppage with the body shot tho that look funky as hell with no crowd reacting to it lol.Comment

As a fan of punch stats first off I gotta say, All Punches Matter!
That said it's more complicated than people wanna make it out to be.
While you could pinpoint the winner of probably ~95% of fights that go to decision just by looking at who landed more power punches in more rounds it's not THAT easy all the time.
Sometimes those jabs when they are as dominating as they are in some fights + it don't hurt when it's coming from a guy with some pop in his jabs, & for full disclosure I had GGG & Charlo both winning, close the distance on rounds & can make overall punches landed in a round win the day or just make power punches less likely to win the round.
Or that's my take on it as a fan of punch stats who isn't one of these weirdo haters who think it's just a video game score type stat where the most landed punches should equal the winner.Comment

Good post man. Yeah obviously we have to quantify the effect of each punch, and not just simply tally up who landed more overall punches or jabs or power punches. I like compubox because I think more or less they usually get it right, and they help to paint a picture of what is happening. As a fan of punch stats first off I gotta say, All Punches Matter!

I never really loved the designation of either jabs or power punches. I almost would have preferred more of a breakdown, or just simply jabs/other punches. Scoring anything other than a jab as a 'power punch' just feels misleading.
The average power punch is probably harder than the average jab, but there are definitely some jabs that are more of a power punch than a listed 'power punch.' And jabs almost always land cleaner than a 'power punch' from my view. Making them easier to score.Comment

100% agree on the bolded & I think that's one of the dumbest things compubox did when they came up with the whole genre of punch stats.Good post man. Power Punches would be better labeled as non-jabs or go a lil deeper & label all the punches, uppercut, hook, straight & note head or body. That would detail things better & probably enlighten fans even more on what's impressing the judges.
One thing I'd like to see in the future is a microchip put in gloves that could measure the power of each punch impacting each fighter. That could really give you a good take on who was winning & in theory that could look very video game-ish which I think people would understand better & enjoy.Comment
