  • Comments Thread For: UK Boxing: Fans Dealt Blow, Crowds Not Returning Any Time Soon

The hopes of crowds returning to boxing in the UK any time soon have been dealt a serious blow after the Government put back plans to allow fans attend from next month. The Government had earmarked October 1 as the date to start allowing fans back after a series of pilot schemes with limited audiences. But with the Covid-19 infection rate on the rise again, plans for a phased return of fans have been paused.

Boxers need to realize that ordinary people are suffering and losing their jobs so boxers should start fighting for less money. They don't need crowds. They got sponsorship and TV money and PPV.

Guess that rules out Joshua/Pulev. Eddie needs those fans.

Hearn better figure a plan for Joshua now. He is wasting a prime year of his career over dopey crowds. Usyk as well. Nothing we could do March - July. Not firming up plans now is negligence. Many fighters are gonna show up in a ring in 2021 to discover they’ve grown old

Lack of live gates for the foreseeable future will have a serious impact on fights.

One option is to have PPV events with a lower price point and sell whatever commercial advertising you can get as well. I believe the UK typically has lower priced PPV events already.

Another option is to hold fights in open air venues in host countries with less restrictions. Logistically, I would imagine that would be difficult.

Fighters need to make a decision if they will be willing to take fights for less than normal amounts because I doubt promoters and networks will cover the difference in revenue that the crowd provides; it's not a sustainable model.

FYI, neither white people nor the British are a ******* Media-approved protected class. Your pleas have fallen on deaf ears.

Those are all excellent points. The only venue that makes sense is an outdoor stadium with massive screens in California or Nevada. If the tickets are accessible people will go just for the event.

The lack of a crowd at boxing events was definitely strange at first but I think everyone is used to it by now. The only real reason that a crowd might be considered necessary at these events is greed on the fighters’ and promoters’ part, nothing else. Even without a live gate, high level (Ie. Televised) professional boxing as an industry is taking a way smaller hit proportionally than most other forms of business in the UK.
