  • How good was Prime Montell Griffin?

He beat James Toney twice. He was outboxing Roy Jones in their first meeting before he won via disqualification. He was never the same boxer after RJJ stopped him in their 2nd fight. I think he was robbed in the Eric Harding fight. He's only 5'7", but he became an undisputed Light Heavyweight Champion PS: This guy deserves a highlights on youtube.

Roy was toying with him in that first fight because he was bored and clearly superior, what are you talking about?

Roy would give away rounds because he didn’t want to exert energy.

Yes once Roy Jones Junior started to go through the gears? It was game over 'I have always felt as if Griffin was play acting after he as hit while he was kneeling etc

He wasn't really outboxing Roy. He did have a few good early rounds but Roy was taking over more and more before he got DQ'd.

He was a very good counter puncher. A smart southpaw. He was only 5'7 so being that short as a LHW was very impressive.

          He wasn’t a southpaw.

Very skilled fighter. Lacked physical attributes but made up for it with his skills.

The only fighter to trouble a prime Roy Jones.

            Beat Toney twice (close fights)

            Very very good fighter.

Of course, Griffin knew he couldn’t hang with Roy and tried to find a way out.

When Roy felt invincible he would “play with his food” somewhat. He did it in a lot of those fights in his prime, he always had a different gear or level he could hit. A lot of great fighters were this way, including Mayweather. They never wanted to show you exactly what they could do and how good they really were, only glimpses to remind you and then go back into auto pilot/preservation mode.

His show was ok I guess, but he’s no Phil Donahue.

Good fighter but no he did not beat James twice. Both were bad decisions IMO but did give lights out hell each time and got the nod.

Given his height, Montell was incredible.

Myself and a lot of people thought Toney won both fights. Especially the second.

He gave Roy some problems in the early rounds, but Roy had him figured out by the time he took the dive.

He was good, but not as good as those two.
