Why wear gloves? Why have scantioning bodies? Why have rules at all? After all, if two men want to fight, let them fight.
Not much of a boxing argument, is it?
If Tyson went in with a baseball bat, it would produce a certain level of violence, though I hope we'd agree this would be far from acceptable. So I don't find the production of 'a certain level of violence' a compelling argument.
The issue is that they are both shells of their former selves, incapable of producing any true, competitive sporting spectacle.
It is a case of weighing up of the potential upside versus the potential downside.
The potential downside is that someone might get seriously injured in a way that would reflect very poorly on boxing as whole, and even more poorly on whoever gave this fight the go ahead.
The upside is... people make some money. Some fans possibly get to enjoy some nostalgia.
I think that pales against the risks of some old men getting hurt in who-didn't-see-this-coming kind of way that would be a very bad look for the sport.
