Comments Thread For: Povetkin: I Look Forward To Fighting Fury, But I'm Focused on Whyte Rematch

By Tris Dixon - By It's been nearly a week since the few in attendance ringside at the final Fight Camp event of the summer were left in a stunned silence. Russian Alexander Povetkin had cancelled Dillian Whyte's long-awaited shot at Tyson Fury's WBC title after holding tight for his opportunity for 1,000-or-so days. Everyone knew Povetkin was not a gimmie for Whyte...

I'd be very surprised for this to happen..

By the time Fury an AJ have finished, Pov will be well out of the equation imo. It'll be at least 2 years time and Povetkin would have to be top dog of the rest by then. Just can't see it happening unless the Fury/AJ doesn't got ahead..

I sense Povetkin is a honest man, the knockdowns where not heavy knockdowns 'When fighters show frustration, and anger when they are decked' This is a sign that they are still game.

It has got to play a factor on Whyte's mind? Knowing that Povetkin's power can completely turn his world upside down etc

The sooner this fight is made, the more it plays into the hands of Povetkin.

Agreed. Pov certainly wasn't wobbly when he got up from either KD, and yes Whyte will be much more cautious in fight 2. He now knows how devastatingly powerful Povetkin can be. And BTW, that uppercut, thrown that way... not something you see often in the ring.

It is also not just once punch Whyte has to be worried about 'Povetkin has sparked out fighters, with a variation of punchers'.

Still a 50/50 fight but, if the fight is made this year 'Povetkin has all the momentum'.

That punch is probably a move Teddy Atlas drummed into Povetkin.

                Seems like a decent guy

I really appreciate the way Povetkin speaks in respectful tones with a dash of humility added. It'd be a good lesson for the foul-mouthed, trash-talking, hyper-bragging types. You can be a winner without being a nasty essobee.

Not poking holes here bc I do not do that and on this count I do not know the ansere but was caught by the comment I heard where most rematchs end in the same result. Is that a fact or a feeling a sense beings we are talking fights? I could google it but figure lot more fight knowledge in this boxing forum. Not to change the subject or hi-jack the rematch talk. Just came to mind. I wont list the fights I remember but they are mixed in my mind. Or my mind is mixed up today. Song of the day ? Let it rain and it sure is. Keep the floods away would be nice. Flash or otherwise. yea I am a metorologist now too.

It always gets trotted out that rematches usually go the same way... but I think it's slightly more complicated than that.

In recent history if the guy showed himself to be the better fighter then he typically does it again. Styles make fights. Some fighters are just kryptonite to others.

If it came down to a big punch landing then there's every chance it can be overturned in the rematch.

                    Looking recently at some rematches..

Fury was better in the first. Made it more clear in the second.
Joshua got caught with a big shot (though the end was dragged out); was a big favourite to avenge and did.
Lewis got caught with big shots by Rahman and McCall; was a big favourite to avenge and did so emphatically (twice)
Holyfield was better than Tyson in the first and was showing it again in the rematch.
Lewis deserved the first v Holyfield, got the second.
Bowe v Golota was identical second time around and a bit of a basket case.

Bowe v Holyfield is the only real outlier. It switched in the rematch after Bowe got the first win, but that was so close that you couldn't really pick one style as being better.

All the others showed that, while stoppages might be more definitive, they don't necessarily prove the better boxer. And if someone proves they are the better boxer, they'll typically show it again.

Not to take any legitimacy away from a flash stoppage, of course. All wins are equal, it's just that some are a better indicator for a rematch.

History doesn't say Povetkin necessarily does it again. Based on the way the fight went, Whyte will be a deserved favourite.
