There are two factors here: Broadcast TV and that boxing is live and avoiding controversy. In this day and age of COVID cancellations, boxing has a chance to truly build an audience. Obviously, those of us on this site will watch. But boxing needs that casual viewer, and Top Rank on ESPN and PBC on Fox can reach that audience, starved for entertainment.
Also- and please, I am not trying to start a flame war here, honest- so far boxing is avoiding turning any of it's live broadcasts into political messaging. People want to be entertained, and by avoiding that they do have a chance to grow those numbers. I love these ratings. Right now boxing is honestly making all the right decisions. ESPN has been hit by decreasing subscriber base (from almost 100 million in 2013 to 86 million in 2020, losing a painful 2 million from November 2018) so that leaves Fox as the next best hope to reach casual sport fans looking for some fun to drink beer to on a Saturday night.
We need some big name fights. But other than that what is there not to admire about how boxing is progressing in the post shut down world?
