Feeling fit and being fighting fit are very different things. Boxing is not a game and it tends to be very rough to those who overstay their welcome. This is a sport of inches where a little loss of timing can have brutal consequences.

I don’t know how good the guy Martinez is fighting but when you are old a bum can beat you. Mike Tyson was embarrassed by Danny Williams and others yet he looked like he was a fit man. Old men should stay away from contact sports. People will try to point that a few guys have fought and won at that age but that’s more of exceptions than the norm.

Lol it puzzles me also, why does anyone think they can be better in any aspect of this sport at 45 than they were at 35. Even the successful old men like Foreman and Hopkin were shells of their former selves but their styles allowed them to beat younger champions with obvious flaws.

Like aging is real and it’s physically detrimental at his age. More worrying is that his style relied on speed and reflexes, he’ll look like a fool with his hands down by his side with almost no reaction time whatsoever. Hopefully he sticks to club level so we don’t have to see him get knocked silly by someone he would have toyed with a decade ago.

You see grandpabernard always clinging to this myth in all of his threads. We have made vast discoveries and revelations in sports science and nutrition, and humans are living longer in general. Competing into your 40s is a choice, you aren't some outlier.

People still swear you fall off a cliff after 31 and it's hilarious you can tell it's a bunch of desk jockeys who generally recite that nonsense.

Now all that said, damage in the ring and injuries play a huge roll, and Maravillas knees were jacked up, so this isn't just age and ring rust. But I'll be rooting for him. Cats out here think they are doing someone a favor by saying stuff like "don't come back and fight Mike". Imagine someone calling themselves your friend and then discouraging you from doing something you love. I'm all for fighters refusing to hang it up. I love that passion and that refusal to let time dictate the rules for you.
your right but this isn't masters athletics , swimming or cycling here , combat sports are completely different and the aging process is far more visible when you get whacked in a ring after a certain age . If age were just a number why do we not see Olympic champions over a certain age in events that require power , speed , hand /eye coordination and endurance ? Participating , competing and winning are all completely different en****** during every decade of our lives ..

Everything is set for a Keith Thurman vs Sergio Martinez future matchup.

Which would give an entirely new meaning to the expression "going out on a limb".
