The Pacquiao fight is a case of an old man not knowing when to cut his losses and retire. He was in no condition to keep fighting at the elite level, and he got beaten from pillar to post. Unfortunately for Oscar, his horrible last outing is how most people are gonna remember him in years to come.

Funny he wasn't elite in your eyes, Floyd ducked Oscar's rematch, which he was contractually obligated to give him, he retired and Oscar fought Manny instead.

Also he beat Trinidad, Oscar was giving him a boxing lesson, until he backed off because he thought he already won 7 rounds (which he did).
He beat Mosley in the rematch (roided Mosley, who went on to beat Margacheato)
Floyd barely beat old Oscar (split decision, Oscar was winning till he gassed out)

Oscar has a good career and always fought the best, he could have cherrypicked and had a way better record.

I thought he was a little overrated. I thought Trinidad deserved his win over Oscar when he was weighted drained making 147 and would have beat him by a wider margin at 154. He was the cash cow and as such he usually got generous scoring. He was a converted southpaw with a very good jab and hook but an average right. he was an excellent fighter but somewhat overrated by most in my opinion.

That's what people aren't getting. He fought a list of who's who in boxing at the time and even when he lost made a good showing of himself. Those days are gone cause nobody wants to give up their 0 so we get joke championship fights for the most part nowadays.

Yeah man he fought nearly all of those guys I listed close to their primes too. Oscar was a great fighter, a lot of people probably just look at his losses on Boxrec without actually contextualising how he performed in those fights.

De La Hoya's competitive spirit and level of opposition are not questioned. But fighting a lot of names doesn't always translate as being an ATG. Especially when you lose to a good portion of them, and - to me - this includes the Quartey and Whitaker fights (whereas I think he won against Trinidad, to be fair).

De La Hoya is not the only example where, in a given sport, the establishment decides that someone is "the one". He's a classic case of hype job, substantiated by several appreciable results. But still a hype job.

Furthermore, the fact that he joined that very establishment after the end of his boxing career tells all one needs to know. He bought The Ring magazine and fired Nigel Collins because the latter would not play according to Oscar's rules.

I guess the answer to that would depend on what you mean by overrated. At one time he was undefeated and the #1 rated p4p champion if I remember correctly. I think Oscar was an excellent fighter and he probably deserved that #1 p4p ranking AT THAT TIME. He started falling off after he took that L against Trinidad (personally I felt Oscar had that fight won, he shouldnt have ran for the final rounds though). I think that prior to the Tito fight he was rated correctly but after that he kinda went to s41t. The thing that I admire most about Oscar is that he wasn't afraid to fight the very best. He took on Mosely, Pacquiao, Mayweather, Trinidad, Hopkins, and some others I left out

I don't think he's overrated. The Chavez and Quartry wins were razor close, but not controversial in my eyes. The Trinidad and Mosley 2 losses were controversial and his "win" over Strum was controversial too. Nothing else really stands out to me. He had a great career and looked like a great fighter to me.
