Just a little call for assistance into Mexican naming conventions if someone could help me out?
Articles on the Vences vs Vs Vargas fight seem split between calling him Luis Vargas and Luis Lopez... course his full name is Luis Alberto Lopez Vargas.

Course I noticed a similar thing with JC Martinez Aguilar, and I started off refering to him as JC Aguilar until it became clear that J C Martinez was the overwhelmingly more common usage.

Anyone give me a lil info on Mexican naming conventions, mainly to satisfy my curiosity, but also to help avoid confusion on future Pick Ems (and to avoid any faux pas should I find myself in Mexico ). Also whether there's similar conventions across the Hispanophone world.

In the U.S most Mexican Americans use only their fathers last name.
In Mexico most people use both their father and mothers last names.
Add in a middle name in there and you have a mouthful for the ring announcer.

Thanks man, so am I right in assuming that it's convention to put the patronymic surname first and that if only one of the surnames is being used it's typically the patronymic (so in this case Lopez, in the case on JCMA then Martinez)? Or is it frowned upon to skip the matronymic appelido in Mexico?

If I can I'd rather adhere to the naming traditions of the country a fighter comes from (wherever in the world it may be) if that is at all possible rather than anglicising everything - I'd like to give due respect to all cultural heritages if I can, given of course the limitations of transliteration for fighters who come from places that don't use a latin alphabet.

EDIT: mmm, interesting. So mainly based on Spanish customs with a few national varations across the Spanish speaking world.

There is one thing that is easy to see when researching Mexican last names—everyone seems to have more than one. Understanding the reason fo…
