Even that version of RJJ would knock Canelo out, no scorecards involved.

Tough question. I think a prime RJJ absolutely toys with Canelo but this version of Roy got walked down and iced by Glen Johnson. Based on that, I’d probably lean towards Canelo mid to late.

I question that losing weight hurt Jones at all. All kinds of fighters lose much more weight than that with no ill effects. It is just an assumption losing weight after fighting Ruiz and not a fact. Guys like Bradley and Hatton gained huge amounts of weight between fights and then lost it all no problem and fought as well as ever. hell, Fury lost 150 pounds from his high of 400 pounds and he is better than ever now. Getting knocked out by Tarver more likely took something out of Jones and he was never as good. Maybe it ruined his confidence and hurt his ability to take a punch.I think today's canelo would beat jones if he fought him after Jones was koed by Tarver but would lose to Jones before then.

I'd still pick Roy. Canelo is way out of his element even fighting very past it Kovalev who hasn't looked the same since the 1st Ward fight. Also adding Tarver is 6'2 , 75" reach and a LEGIT Light Heavyweight, I don't think Canelo beat either of them. Roy would still have speed, power, size advantage over Canelo here. I don't think Canelo's power would effect Roy like people assume. Roy got KO'd by LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHTS / HEAVYWEIGHTS, not Middleweights posing as such.

Why not Canelo against Tarver? Why does he have to fight the loser?

Roy pre and post Tarver KO are two very different things. I'd very easily favor him over Canelo.

Pre post Ruiz tbh, going back down in weight so hastily was lunacy.

True, but it's the KO that shook him mentally. He wouldn't even pull the trigger in the third Tarver fight and just shelled up against Johnson. He was actually looking good against Tarver in the rematch prior to that punch. It was one of those "stars align" moments. Tarver caught lightning in a bottle with that punch, and he just happened to do it at the right time of Roy's career that led to one of the quickest descents in the sports' history.

Yeah the decline was almost instant. I was a huge Roy fan as you can probably guess and he went from looking unbeatable in 2003 to shot in 2004/05. I hated watching the last 10-15 years of his career.
