I'm not sure about that either, but I can't factor that in to this calculation. It's pure triangular logic... neither Ward nor Calzaghe fight like Kovalev, so that fight has no real bearing on this one.

all i will say is when this fantasy fight came up in the mayweather gym which is always a very biased crowd most trainers and fighters favoured calzaghe. great fight it would have been and hard to call. if they fought 10 times it could easily be 5-5

Calzaghe's best wins were against older fighters past their prime. Ward on the other hand never slipped or got old, he retired in his prime and fought everyone in their prime. Any match-up would need to be in Ward's prime and that would be the difference.

Prime vs prime, it starts out close before Ward calculates Joes repetitive pattern and starts landing hard with a convincing connect percentage.

Joe Calzaghe was Hector Camacho, a guy that relied on fast hands and movement, he had one gear and he was great at it. Joe's style, like Hector Camacho looked spectacular against slow movers and one-dimensional styles. Andre Ward on the other hand had a very high IQ and adapted to every single style (IN THEIR PRIME)... and there in lay the difference.

Ward's resume had several PRIME boxers and PRIME, fast, light punching movers. Joe was successful but he never had to adapt because he wisely stuck to opponents that he matched well with. Joe did eventually fight Roy Jones and Hopkins but both were clearly on the back end of their prime. Bernard Hopkins being the more technical of the two was able to adjust and extend his career and much like Joe Calzaghe he only fought specific styles . Keep in mind, prime Andre Ward was never on Bernard's short list but prime Sergey Kovalev was and we all saw how that worked out. Conversely, we all watched Andre Ward ruin Sergey forever.

For the record, I'd take odds on a prime Bernard Hopkins easily beating both Cazaghe and Kovalev. In his prime Bernard was that good.
