It feels like it just happened again because of the smile the memories bring to your face, or because the where you were when watching is instantly so vivid. For this author, one of those fights...

One of my favorite fights all time. I loved both boxers at the time. Jirov was tough as nails.

That was a very memorable fight and a good one too. It's very possible that Jirov probably edged it due to his higher punch output and workrate on the three official judges scorecard.

However, it was Toney's toughness, perseverance and endurance that carried the day. Moreover, he landed the cleaner and more effective counters, plus he scored the only knockdown in the twelfth round.

So I can't complain about the decision. It was a very close fight but they gave it to Toney maybe because he had gone the distance and he was the sentimental favorite due to his age and being the natural smaller man.

Absolutely and without question; This fight ruined Vassiliy Jirov's career. He was never the same after this fight.

              It definitely did
Jirov was a pretty good fighter himself
He gave it his all , a real back and forth fight

A great fight that was very close and far from dominant despite revisionist history acting like Toney won in dominant fashion which he certainly didn’t in reality.

                  Didn’t ruin anything.

Jirov was nothing special before or after.

If people call it a great fight that is generally an acknowledgement that there was a back and forth. With no one dominating.

As far as Jirov, how can one win the Val Barker trophy in the Olympics yet be nothing special?
