Who had the better career GGG or Kovalev?

Both seem to be coming to the end now.

Both were dominant forces in their respective divisions.

Both held 3 of the 4 ABC titles.

Both were also unlucky not to get the nod in their career defining fights.

    Golovkin.

He tied a record for consecutive title defenses in the middleweight division.

His best win is better than Kovalev’s best win.

He’s older than Kovalev and hasn’t fallen apart yet.

He salvaged a draw in the Canelo series were Kovalev didn’t get that in the Ward series.

I think Kovalev has a deeper resume overall in terms of quality wins but it’s not that much deeper.

I think this question comes down to everyone's opinions on Kovalev-Ward 1 and the Golovkin-Alvarez fights.

Depending on how you feel about those fights, it's understandable to think either guy had a better career than the other.

GGG, he made far more money. For me, that makes his career better.

he was no where near a record....you dont combine super titles with secondary defenses

Monzon holds the record for lineal title defenses at 14

and hopkins hold the record for major title defenses at 20

GGG and record title defenses are a joke

Both are eurobums but i give it to ggg

Ggg has beaten a bunch of no name decent fighters and kov has win over old bhop and a descent boxer in pascal. Kov is a mental biatch though, once ward cracked him he has resorted to wearing dresses and lipstick

Kovalev had the deeper resume and has the bigger wins......he had some devastating losses past prime but at his best he was not only knocking out 2nd tier guys like GGG made a reputation off of, he also knocked out world champions and top 5 guys like Jean Pascal, Cleverly, Campillo, battered Hopkins, outboxed alvarez

lost and regained the title, at 175 where many are not able to do so historically

4 losses past prime doesnt change he put together a hall of fame career and was the dominant lightheavyweight of the 2010s ( he fought stiffer comp than Stevenson)

Very good point. I’d say GGG but that is largely because I felt he won both Canelo fights. Thought he clearly won the first and edged the second. I did have Kovalev winning the first Ward fight 114-113 but he decisively lost in the rematch.

Neither lost in their primes tbf and both regained titles after losing them.

Would you say 49 yr old B-Hop is a better win than Jacobs?

I think their resumes are very close.
