Larry Merchants calls Wilder the "Last Black Hope"

To everyone that says imagine if a white guy said what Haney said

    well... https://www.boxingscene.com/forums/s...d.php?t=842448

No need to imagine. All you see is a bunch of people saying that Larry isn't racist or calling back people sensitive

    So stop the fake outrage

We’ve had “great white hopes”, we’ve never had a white fighter say “I’ll never lose to a black boy”. That’s the difference.

I’m not condoning any of it btw, they should just leave colour out of it, period.

I don't think either comments by Merchant or Haney were end of the world situations and I'm too thick skinned to be racially insulted by stuff like that but I did find it odd what either of them said, especially Merchant cuz it doesn't even make any sense.

        History lesson

The term, "the great white hope," reflects the racism and segregation of the era in which Johnson fought. Johnson, the first African American to hold the World Heavyweight Championship title, was one of the best fighters of his generation. Yet, white reaction against Johnson's win and his very public relationships with white women was so strong that, in 1912, the United States Congress, concerned that scenes of Johnson pummeling white boxers would cause race riots, passed a law making it illegal to transport prizefight films across state lines.[14] "The great white hope" is a reference to the boxer who whites hoped would finally defeat Johnson.

"Minter became an unofficial poster boy for white English racism when he told the attendant media, "It has taken me 17 years to become champion of the world. I'm not going to let a black man take it away from me."

After Hagler won by stoppage the arena rioted throwing beer cans and bottles at Hagler.

I’m well aware of all of that...

Different to what Haney said as he was referring to one fighter but equally as offensive.

As I said people should just leave colour out of it...

I'm sensing a different energy when there's a black man on the receiving end of a racist comment. "but but but if a white guy said what Haney said"... stfu

Just think how much calmer the world would be if ppl just took heed of that last bit.

What did Larry Merchant mean when he said that? Haney said he won't be losing to no white men, that's easy enough to decipher but what was Larry's point?
