His performance against Jacobs looks far better in hindsight.

A lot of fighters seem to like chess. The Klitschko’s would play each other for hours.
Usyk, Bud, Pirog, the Klits... almost enough to make you speculate there could be a strong link between mental focus and agility and boxing ability.

You ever heard of chess boxing? I always found the idea fascinating - in fact there was a dude on here actually does it I spoke with a coupla years back, can't recall the username now though. That ****s gotta be real difficult, I know from trying to play online right after training BJJ it's incredibly difficult to stay focused through exhaustion, and the discipline it must take to step straight from ring to board gotta be something else.

There has to be, I suppose it’s a different form of mental warfare.

I actually remember seeing a feature about it on KOTV. I would struggle enough just concentrating on the chess, my amateur coach always told me I was “too much of a thinker” though so maybe I should’ve got into it. Or maybe he was just using a kind way of telling me I was sh**.😂😂

I’d actually be interested in seeing a full fight though, would checkmate be equivalent to a KO? Can you win on points?

Ha ha.. I hadda go away and research the rules, I did recall it as fewer rounds, but maybe it's more cos this one's a world championship

Explains the rules at about 1:30... 11 rounds, 12 mins each on the Chess clock. Starts with 4 mins of chess then 3 of boxing 6 rounds chess total 6 x 4mins chess 5 x 3 mins boxing. KO or Checkmate is a win. Running out of time on the board is also an L. A draw on the board goes to points in the ring.

As I woulda thought the biggest challenge is to avoid making ****** mistakes on the board once you get tired, which is easier said than done cos your focus just goes when you're real tired. I guess the best strategy would be fairly cautious play.

        • This full event's kinda a bit better cos they got a proper chess display so you can follow the chess too. Not quite sure I'm quite interested enough to watch 3 hours of that ish though...

Hahaha yeah it would majorly test your concentration, especially once the fatigue sets in. Definitely one of the strangest sports going.

Second fight alvarezs output increased but ggg still outlanding and more consistent i had it 7 - 5 ggg.

In before canelo nut huggers storm in, i admire alvarezs skill and change of tactics in the rematch but i feel he did not produce a dominant enough performance to take the belts.
Literally word for word how I saw both bouts and what I think of Canelo. To add we saw 2 classics and the rematch going into the last two rounds was a real nail biter. Kudos to Canelo for taking him and fighting 24 rds at such a high level and kudos to GGG for rising to the occasion during the championship rounds so late in his career clearly past his prime in the rematch. He did enough to keep his belts. Love it. There were no losers but one guy got screwed twice.

              • I didn't go through the whole of this thread, so if someone ended up already sharing the following, then my apologies. The following version of the rematch is one I cobbled together back at the end of January and posted to my YT channel, as well as sharing it in a thread here. It is 1080p 50fps and most importantly to me, sans all commentary, only with all the fight and crowd audio. Enjoy if you should choose to do so and haven't yet seen it.

Yeah he was gonna fight him but took proksa instead. What a dance that would have been!
