The impression I always got is they wanted to create this mythological image of Golovkin. One that consisted of KO'ing Heavyweights in sparring, but never proving anything against an opponent at a weight as low as Super Middleweight in the ring.

Just as Harry Greb is a legend without footage, or many fighters from Murderers Row are legendary without known footage, they wanted to create an idea that GGG is undefeated in all hypothetical bouts and seen as a God without actually proving it in the ring.

Which is why every time G would say he would fight someone of a higher weight, only for said match to somehow fall a part in negotiations, they would count that as another win on his resume. {Insert fighter} ducked him so G wins by default.

Any fight that fell a part, happened in sparring or made up by his fan base all counted as wins on his record. Why is this significant? Because when we're all old and grey, they can tell their kids about the Legend from Kazakhstan who was the greatest fighter ever who could defeat any fighter known to man only if they had the courage to step in the ring with him in real life.

Much easier to build a reputation like that with fantasy than proof in the ring.

Hell, the rumor was Golovkin stopped Kovalev in "sparring". Somehow this went on G's resume as a win.

Can you imagine 50 years from now our great grand children talking about the Legend GGG who slayed a prime Kovalev except it wasn't televised?

This is the fantasy that comes to mind when we think about the potential of the Murderers Row. Not taking anything from the M.R, but this was the atmospherics they were trying to build for Golovkin
