Comments Thread For: Mikey Garcia: My Brother, Father Still Feel I'm Too Small For 147 Pounds

As pleased as they were with his performance against Jessie Vargas, Mikey Garcia's brother and father still want him to move back down from the welterweight division to junior welterweight. Eleven months after suffering his first professional defeat, a lopsided points loss to Errol Spence Jr., Garcia's second straight appearance in the 147-pound division went much better versus Vargas. Garcia overcame a slow start to knock down Vargas in the fifth round and won a 12-round unanimous decision February 29 at Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas.

He's stuck in a bad spot - I don't think he can, or has any desire to make 135, and Robert has a little California cottage industry at 140 w/ Ramirez. I know they don't want to upset that apple cart, so now what does Mikey do?

He should listen to Robert and Big G.

Mikey has looked ordinary in his two fights at 147 lbs.

Yeah, well Mikey is the only one who doesn't realize that they're right. He was dominated vs spence and struggled significantly with a fringe level fighter in Jesse vargas. Should've stayed at 140 or fought Loma before leaving 135. He could've won that fight and the perception of him now would be much different.

Twenty years from now when Mikey looks back at his career, he will see his best days were at 140 lbs.

Money aside, a win at 135lbs vs Loma does more for his career than a win at 147lbs against a fighter not named Pacman, Spence, Bud, Danny, Shawn or Keith (we could debate on Danny and the current version of Keith imo).

I think that Mikey should look to become the undisputed/unified champion at 140. Perhaps he doesn't fight Jose Ramirez but Regis Prograis is a good opponent, as is Josh Taylor. Not to mention guys at 135 who will probably move up (Teofimo Lopez, Ryan Garcia, Devin Haney).

He’s to small for 140. Needs to get disciplined with his diet. There’s no reason he can’t make 135.

It's a shame cause he is a great fighter, just does not have the size to compete there. If he wins a world title at 147 I would be amazed, go back down there are some good names at 140.
