Comments Thread For: WBC Prez Explains Flexibility Canelo Has as Franchise Champion

Last year the WBC introduced their new Franchise Champion and stated, "the Franchise Champion is a special designation and status which the WBC may bestow to a current WBC world champion, who is also an elite boxer and has achieved and maintains the highest of statures of the sport."

"the Franchise Champion is a special designation and status which the WBC may bestow to a current WBC world champion, who is also an elite boxer and has achieved and maintains the highest of statures of the sport."

So failing a drug test is maintaining the highest statures of the sport?

"That is one of the purposes of the Franchise Champion. To allow him to go into the best challenges possible. He moved up to 175 and knocked out Kovalev. He might fight at 168 or 160."

So he couldn't have moved up to 175 and knocked out Kovalev, and he can't fight at 168 or 160, without the Franchise title?

              Why not?

              Sulaiman's statement explains absolutely nothing.

Canelo is one of the best fighters but the franchise tag seemingly means you never have to fight your mandatories, do whatever you want to as long as you make money for the WBC.

Basically he can avoid the best opponents and jump up and down the weight classes identifying who is the weakest belt holder and allowing fighters to get older and older before he targets them again

If Canelo loses does he keep the Franchise Champion tag?
