Only sensible to weigh the upside vs the downside, i.e. the risks vs the potential benefits.

The risk is that you are less likely to get a decision vs Canelo in a close fight. An L against Canelo hot on the heels after a fight that many view Smith as getting a lucky decision would be extremely damaging to his career.

The potential benefit is winning enhancing his reputation and therefore better future earnings. I think some, including the author of the article, are overestimating how much this would be though. Canelo is a crossover star of sorts. Unlike most crossover stars, he is not a household name wordwide. He definitely is box office, but take my girlfriend's knowledge as a yardstick of your run-of-the-mill non-boxing punter. Crossover stars that she knows the names of include LeBron James, Cristiano Ronaldo, Mike Trout, Tiger Woods, Lewis Hamilton, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Usain Bolt. She has no fucking clue who Saul Canelo Alvarez is. And if Smith beat Canelo, she'd have similarly have no fucking clue who he was either.

Canelo's box office comes from a certain demographic. And that demographic is not likely to switch allegiance to Smith in the case of a Smith victory. So let's not over-egg this notion of becoming the golden goose. That isn't going to happen.

Smith really would be better off re-matching John Ryder, to try and win some goodwill back from boxing fans.

Robbie Barrett I noticed you've made threads about Haymon costing guys "life changing money."

Does the same apply to Hearn, who cost Callum Smith life changing money?

Did Hearn stop Smith from taking the fight?

Yes he did. Why else wouldn't Smith budge off his requested amount?

I think Hearn was happy feeding Canelo Billybob instead of his fav smith(because he knows hell milk smith for more this way in the long run,he gets rid of the payroll deadwood Saunders from the highly paid roster, because he'll likely no longer have the only thing keeping him relevant his belt,& Hearn made an instant profit on Billybob this way opposed to him being a dead investment of a set of phat tlts,& this way Smith gets the Canelo payday down the road anyways,so in reality I'm inclined to believe he screwed Smith for his own gain because Smith might not stay at 168(despite no longer being able to size bully anyone at lhw which is why hes at smw to begin with) but regardless Smith deserves blame also because he looked like sht vs a cherrypick where as Billybob at least got the ko)

These fighters are afraid of betting on themselves.
If he thought he could win the purse wouldn’t matter as a win over Canelo would bring life changing money the rest of his career.
He ducked the cash cow as he knows he would catch an L. Simple as that.

Ok. I guess Callum can always get the fight somewhere down the road.

See thats just it as I wrote, Smith might not get the fight because he might not be able to make 168 anymore by then(I'm not sure if he'll be competitive at lhw though)either way I agree that Hearn is partially responsible for BJS getting the fight as we don't know how hard he pushed for Smith(& Smith should've been favored by hearn imho not least because Billybob used to take shts all over Hearn regularly but also because this might be his(smiths) only chance at the lottery as the ring champ & wba)

I appreciate your answer. I was just trying to see what Robbie was thinking about the whole thing since he is very upset when fighters are denied a chance at "life changing money".
