I remember I was sparring back in my much younger days and got dropped so hard that it felt like the lights went out. I dropped and instinctually bounced back up immediately. There was a guy reffing it and gave me the benefit of the 8 count.
Now, nobody would have ever mistaken me for a professional fighter then or now but my mind certainly wasn't thinking any rational thought like "let me take this count so I can recover". It takes a different type to have that type of calm under pressure.
