THE EYE TEST: Is Roberto Duran overrated?

I like to watch fighters, and forget about who they are, or their history and just analyze the fighter himself.

If you watch Roberto Duran fight, and forget he is "Roberto Duran", is his skill set really impressive? I say no.

People act as if Duran was some world beater, his best victory was eeking out a decision against a green 21 year old boy who was Ray Leonard at the time. He got a gift decision against Iran Barkley.

There are several alleged "greats" who if you really look at their skills, they are not special. Marciano, Joe Louis, Julio Cesar Chavez are 3 people who come to mind for me.

I think the same when I watch Lexington Steele in action. If I do not think that he is "Lexington Steele", he's just an average 11-inch còck owner.

This site needs to do a better job of screening posters.

Overrated? Look at the quality of his opposition. Watch the nuances. He had deceptive defensive skills, not as easy to hit as many think. He was an intelligent fighter not just some reckless brawler. He legit beat Barkley and almost beat Hagler while fighting with one hand for ten of those 15 rounds. His training and discipline is what hurt him most.

Sugar Ray Leonard is a top 2 Welterweight of all time. He was 24 when he fought Duran. Duran is the only person with a victory over a prime Ray Leonard.

If you can't see how he maneuvers his opponents arms on the inside to throw combinations while simultaneously stopping them from throwing back, I don't know what to tell you.

Whoa Whoa, let's not get crazy. The judging for that fight was ridiculous. He did not almost beat Hagler. Not even close.

Judging was just fine. Hagler was behind on the scorecards until the last two rounds when Hagler stole the fight back. Duran was the first opponent to take Hagler 15 rounds and he did it after injuring his right hand in the 5th round. Hagler himself admitted he had to fight a careful fight with Duran and could not get careless.

All I needed to see was Duran dissect Pipino Cuevas to know how dangerous this guy was.

Duran was clearly an 'eye test' fighter, given he lost to the other 3 Kings and only holds a win over one of them. But that's okay. So was Mike Tyson.
