Pacquiaos jab, left hand, jab (placing his left foot in front of his right) while almost walking forward was a huge flaw that someone with very good footwork could counter (JMM, Morales & Floyd) for example. He could move and was definitely fast, but not against anyone who had a very high ring IQ.

It's straight up bad and over compensated for by his speed.
How many times has Manny gotten a guy to the ropes just to bounce and bob around like he is Bruce Lee only to find just about any pro boxer can escape if you're going to bounce predictably and leave enough gap for them to get out.Comment

Yeah I never understood that about Manny, even when he's training on the bags, he'll be bouncing around. As you say, it's similar to clichéd visions of martial artists; Street Fighter, Bruce Lee, etcIt's straight up bad and over compensated for by his speed.

I've sparred guys with similar habits to Pacquiao, bouncing up and down all the time, and it's quite simple to slide out to the side and away. Whilst they're going up and down, I'm moving on the horizontal plane. I think good boxing footwork should resemble something like gliding around the ring, always ready to move in any direction (except up!)Comment

Pacquiao’s footwork isn’t bad in the slightest. He can cut off the ring and does, but his goal is usually lining up a straight left, even when he does cut a guy off, he’ll start circling inside to square them up and line a straight left, which leaves a big opening to circle out but Pacquiao often also hits guys on their way out, he’s got a great 180 left hand. Pacquiao’s style has never been to pin a guy on the ropes, most guy’s can’t keep a guy pinned on the ropes unless they create an inside fight. It's straight up bad and over compensated for by his speed.

He looked the best he has at cutting off the ring vs Floyd, stepped over to the right more, but Floyd is not easy to cut off the ring. Cutting off the ring isn’t pinning a guy to the ropes, it’s putting them infront of you so you can mount your offensive. To pin a guy that know’s how to move on the rope you have to grab and go inside. Fighter’s still have to maintain their defense and stamina while chasing, the guy chasing is always at a disadvantage.Comment

Floyd. No doubt whatsoever. It was his ability to control distance that made him what he was. In every other aspect of his game he has competition. He might be one of the best lead power punchers ever as well but his footwork is second to none.Comment

Exactly, footwork is all about juxtaposition and keeping options open.Yeah I never understood that about Manny, even when he's training on the bags, he'll be bouncing around. As you say, it's similar to clichéd visions of martial artists; Street Fighter, Bruce Lee, etc
