As far as using boxing to capture a foothold in the U.S. market, Dazn is failing in large part because it didn’t hire anyone who understood the U.S. boxing market — Eddie doesn’t and found out quickly the top fighters weren’t going to flock on board to a service that hid them behind a curtain so their long-term value wouldn’t grow because no one was seeing them fight, and the fighters he did sign in the U.S. weren’t even household names in their own households.
Eddie is smart in that he has used Dazn monies to shore up his UK business while flailing and failing in the USA. But he hasn’t built a single American star nor even laid a foundation to do so.
Ultimately these investors they’re trying to raise $1B from aren’t buying in to profit off boxing — they expect that money to be used to snatch up pro football/basketball/baseball packages and major conference college streaming to take those products off TV in the U.S. And so far Dazn shows no signs of being able to do so. CBS has waved off the negotiations to re-up for SEC football/basketball, but by all reports that’s going to end up on ABC/ESPN and Dazn hasn’t been mentioned as a player.
If they don’t break out beyond boxing in the U.S., Dazn will never be a player here. They probably have a chance to exist and be successful to some degree in other countries, but I don’t know if they’re sustainable without a U.S. foothold.Comment

As I said when DAZN was first announced as a streaming only player. The competition in America not only exists on tv, but they all have they're own streaming services. So everything you see on cable, you can see on that same channels streaming services. To make it far worst, they dont only focus on a single sport, nor do they focus on a single demographic, and are already intertwined deeply in US households. DAZN entered an already established US market (that consisted of colossal players) with both their legs cut off, eyes covered, and one hand tied behind their back. Not to mention, since when has an Amercian audience fully backed something like this, that was built completely overseas by foreigners, who decided to call they're flag ship app DAZN rather then The Zone. We only need to look at BBC world news channel to understand how difficult something like this is.
Many of us boxing fans hoped that DAZN would work, but let's be real, they hit the US market with an overseas boxing promotion who's majority of fighters were not known to Americans, and who did all he could to disparage the US home grown promoters and acted more like an invading country than a business man. DAZN would probably have been better off tying themselves to a larger existing service, and being that services streaming arm for boxing, while securing a US based promoter to launch in America. Imagine something like DAZN being Amazon Prime's live boxing app. Then off that success, eventually branch off as a separate entity. But, it ain't over yet, so still looking for DAZN to be successful and contribute to boxing instead of trying to take it over.Comment

Very well written and researched article. He hits the nail on the head in the first part of the article. No one is gonna drop pay per view money to watch LSU/Baylor except LSU and Baylor fans. They're trying to be a US power in the boxing scene but yet they have no powerhouse US boxers to build the platform around.
History has shown even recently that casual fans will drop the cash when there's a product worth watching. Manny/Floyd and Floyd/Connor are evident of that. They need a powerhouse fighter with marketable charisma to build their US operations around. I'm a subscriber and want it to succeed but I'm also a rabid boxing fan and not a casual one.
No casual fan is dropping $100/yr to watch Canelo fight Fielding and Andrade fight some tomato can. Give the people the fights and they'll drop the cash. It really is that simple.Comment

“ Also, many fans who follow specific fighters don't follow boxing as a whole.”
That was among the most accurate statements anyone can make about boxing today. Nationalism, tribalism is why Hearn and dazn seeks the Mexican American dollar. Most of them are not boxing fans....they support the popular Mexican fighter of the moment. If it’s not Canelo, Or even Garcia, maybe mungia, and formerly Ruiz, they are just not intersted and wouldn’t be able to name 2% of the current world champions. If you want to chase that demographic you have a window of MAYBE 3-4 fighters who push the needle, really only 1...Canelo.
It’s a much smarter business model to try and capture dedicated boxing fans and casual boxing/sports fans through promotion and good matches.Comment

And therein lies the reason dazn was not able to get even most boxing fans to sign up. Therein lies the reason why dazn has had to stoop to getting YouTube kids and Mexican-American fan base, a fan base that by and large follows only 2 fighters religiously right now, as suscribers. Eddie Hearn came to the USA insulting mainly al haymon, insulting PBC fighters of a particular demographic (African Americans)who wouldn’t sign with him, while being as respectful and cordial as he could be to the Garcia’s, the canelo’s, the pacquiaos, the golovkins, and targeted Deontay wilder for the most vitriolic campaign I have ever seen by a promoter against a fighter and I have been watching boxing for over 40 years now. I never saw king, Arum, Goosen, Duva, Butch, Salita, ANYONE be as nasty as Hearn has been to wilder all for not giving Hearn control over his career. African Americans notice things like that. Hearn has shown himself to be a spoiled detestable individual and that turned off many existing fans of the sport and has resulted in his fan base being niche/tribal fans only. He himself admitted that he came over like a buffoon and has he had it over again would have came over respectfully. Again, he didn’t come over attacking Arum or DLH, he came attacking Haymon and PBC fighters....Comment

And furthermore, don’t come to this country acting like you own it’s people, you’re better than it’s people, like you are in control and all Americans must bow to you like you are some kind of brokedyk king George....foreigners, when you come to this country you come humble and with some respect. If not, stay your arse in your home country with that arrogance.Comment
