How did he do it? He wasn't the flashiest fighter, not the most articulate, not the most charming. How did he become the richest boxer and possibly athlete in history?

    1. Build up and timings of fights. Didn’t he invent the HBO 24/7?

    2. The ‘bad guy’ that people would pay to see get knocked out.

    3. Few very big and marketable names eg Fighting Pacman, McGregor, Canelo

Have Canelo fight Khabib or Masvidal and see what numbers they do. Canelo didn’t have an industry nemesis like Floyd vs Pac. When he did, he fought GGG in 24 rounds. Not milking a fight for 7 years...
Its always the matchup that sells thats common sense, the part you dont see is Floyd is in those matchups more than any other fighter in history, as you try and take him out of the equation or lower his input he is the only guy too do it, just a lucky coincidence right !

Sublime skill and application of his craft. He made u watch so could be like I actually seen him lose. I seen one fighter that I thought could beat Joy Sinclair. His name was Miguel Angel Cotto and he had hair at the time. Too bad Arum wouldn't let them tangle

He marketed himself to the casuals. He went on Dancing with the Stars, WWF, made some commercials and ring walks with Justin Bieber, etc.

He was at the public eye where the masses saw him and got to know him plus he had his boxing ability with the big persona.

Laila Ali did similar in participating in some events and commercials. She did more money in show biz than in boxing.

guy couldnt crack...didnt knock guys out.....but you know what....even lil stuff like him and merchant getting into post ortiz....it sold...people had to watch.....

add 1 circus fight vs mcregor which was a joke that dummies ate up...and there you have it
Floyd appealed to Brit fans by being Hatton, always fought Mexicans, talked trash on ESPN several times over, did Dancing with the Stars, did WWE...the guy created 24/7 and starred in the Showtime version of it, had a long drawn out arrest and brief imprisonment (in solitary jail), always affiliated with 50 cent, Lil Waybe, Justin Beiber, other top athletes and musicians, etc.

Floyd also embraced his bad guy role and did it very well. A marketing genius.

Take Floyd out? Who is Pac? Who is McGregor? The context for these parades was nothing but financial gain for everyone, not just the fighters. Again, Pac vs McGregor did 8million plus PPV combined.

If you want to say that was just Floyd and not because of the dance partners then fine, but Ronaldo nor Messi had those luxuries since their industry they had to always compete at the top level, and I find footsy gay tbh...

No version of Cotto beats Floyd. No way.

Brought up by Top Rank the best marketing / promoting team
Went his own way, added some flavour to the game
Half of viewers tuned in to watch a master the other half to see him lose

Oscar de la Hoya was the biggest boxing star of that time, when he fought Floyd he gave him some of his shine.

                    Mayweather was huge after that.

It’s pretty amazing. There are several reasons, many of which have already been posted, but still. To be over names like Ronaldo, Messi, James, Woods, Federer...not just over, way over, in some cases. These are athletes that have incredible contracts, winnings and endorsements. It boggles the mind how Floyd is above them all. All I can say is, “Kudos, Floyd.”
