Comments Thread For: Ellerbe on Gervonta Davis Becoming a Box Office Star

Gervonta "Tank" Davis became a world champion for the first time in January, 2017 when he stopped Jose Pedraza in 7 rounds at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. He followed that performance up with a 3 round demolition of Liam Walsh in the United Kingdom. Davis then punctuated his year with an 8th round stoppage of Francisco Fonseca on the Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor undercard.

We’re in the day and age where becoming a “box office star” has become a suitable replacement for winning big fights vs top competition, in the eyes of promoters.

Yup, Gervonta eclipses Canelo as the face of boxing any day now. Leonard Ellerbe is the most earnest promoter in boxing.

Does this moron simply believe if he says it enough it will somehow come true? Davis is a fat unprofessional Twitter warrior. Fighting trash opponents while acting like he wants to fight legit boxers.

The question about Tank is who he won't fight next? He won't fight Loma, he's trying to kill blown up bantam and featherweights. He's about to fight another short, fat, old, under achiever. Loma, Lopez, Haney, just to name a few he won't fight.

He actually believe if he says it enough times, get his cheerleaders to do the same on social media and boxing forums that it would catch on.

He cannot be a PPV star with the same lacklustre of opponents that he has fought lately.

Goodluck to him doe as he actually should be a star by now. Boxing since the age of 6, won his first major title almost 3 years ago and then since nothing.

Davis should absolutely be fighting better competition and I've been calling for his team to let him fight Lomachenko for damn near two years now. While Lomachenko would be rightfully favored, I don't think Davis does bad for himself and the fight will be competitive. A loss like that would only make him better in the long run, ala Canelo vs Floyd.

However, disagree about the second part. He's right on track in terms of being a star. Clearly he's showing he can be a ticket seller wherever he fights and at the age of 24, he has a solid name already. Very few legitimate ticket sellers in America but he seems to be one of them. Let's see how he does on PPV against LSC early next year and it would be good to compare it to Lomachenko vs Lopez.
