Comments Thread For: WBC Prez: Andy Ruiz Was a Victim of The Circumstances

World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman believes a lot of opportunists rained down on Andy Ruiz, who the Mexican heavyweight shocked the world in June by stopping Anthony Joshua for the WBO, WBA, IBF, IBO world titles. Last Saturday night in Saudi Arabia, Joshua got revenge when he outboxed Ruiz over twelve rounds to reclaim his world titles.

This is boxing the one who is focused 100 percent on fight night will win. Andy knew what was ahead of him and where the fight could of took him no different from any other boxer who didn't take a fight seriously... weather he trained hard or not it would of been the same results AJ kept him at the end of his jab and moved around its no way cutting the ring off didn't come to his mind on fight night.

& if you asked me it showed that a boxer can take a lost and still be great not everyone is Floyd Mayweather. The greatest boxers has lost in there day.

Definitely agree with the sentiment, but nobody should have known what was at stake more than Ruiz. It's hard to blame him for becoming a somebody overnight and not knowing how to handle it, but it's unfortunately not an excuse either. Joshua trained and fought like a man who knew what that fight meant, despite all of his fame and success, and regardless of what you think he showed how little you need to best a man who isn't taking his craft seriously. After the paydays that Ruiz just got, I'm willing to bet he'll be more professional in his preparation, because based on his spending habits he's gonna want more of them.

Look what Roberto Duran did to himself after he beat Sugar Ray Leonard! I heard he blew up to 230! Look what Buster Douglas did after beating Tyson! Some people can't handle fame & fortune! However there's always hope:

          Pacquiao follows new, spiritual path

LAS VEGAS -- Manny Pacquiao admits that he fell victim to the trappings of his enormous success. That's what can happen when you are one of the highest-paid, most famous athletes in the world.

But Pacquiao believes he has righted the ship with a newfound devotion to his Catholic faith, which he believes saved his marriage and has him living a less tumultuous life so that he can better focus on his boxing career and job as a congressman in the Philippines, where he is a national icon.

His womanizing left his marriage in such shambles that his wife, Jinkee, was on the verge of filing for divorce in the days leading up to Pacquiao's November fight with Juan Manuel Marquez. Things between them were so bad that Jinkee at first refused to accompany her husband to the MGM Grand Garden Arena before the fight. Pacquiao refused to leave the suite without her and, according to members of his camp, when she finally agreed to go with him, Pacquiao wound up arriving so late to the dressing room that he had less than 15 minutes to warm up with trainer Freddie Roach before walking to the ring.

Rushed and distracted by his marital problems, Pacquiao turned in his worst performance in years, eking out a majority decision in his third fight with rival Marquez -- a bout many believed Pacquiao (54-3-2, 38 KOs) lost.

"The fight was not that hard for me, but I was having some family problems," Pacquiao said. "I was in 100 percent physical condition for that fight against Marquez, but I did have some family issues that I had to deal with. I also underestimated him."

"We had a great training camp going into that fight, but on the last week everything fell apart," Roach said. "The personal problems affected the fight, and I don't think Manny will let that happen again. All of the distractions around him caused him to fight poorly."

Besides the womanizing, there was smoking, drinking, heavy ******** -- which caused him to take seven-figure advances before recent fights from Top Rank promoter Bob Arum in order to pay his debts -- and partying nights away while trying to also balance boxing and his political career.

His life was careening out of control.

Manny Pacquiao's life was careening out of control when he decided to renew his commitment to his faith. Now seemingly free from distraction, Pacquiao appears ready to take on his biggest challenge in years: Timothy Bradley Jr.

I find it hard to disagree with what Sulaiman is saying as a whole. While Ruiz is responsible for his own downfall, it's not something we haven't seen before. The rapidity of the rise from the humblest origins to celebrity and riches is perhaps more extreme in boxing than in any other sport. Some handle it well. Most don't.

I listened to a. Interview with Hunter who sparred Ruiz during training camp earlier today. The impression I get is that this excuse was really just his way of giving a reason for a loss rather than evidence that he didn’t train. Did he put weight on, well clearly yes - but did he really not do training? I’m not convinced that bit is true at all.

Sulaiman's word is hardly ever credible. Much less when it comes to fighters of Mexican descent. Circumstances don't make your decisions for you. You make your decision under the circumstances. Him admitting to his most common wrongdoings in this case only made him look worse.
