I think because heavyweights tend to be slower and easier targets, plus durability doesn't seem to scale up with size the same way as power. With that said, there are a couple of examples in lower weight classes - I think Randall Bailey is probably the best one as killamane said. I also think that Wilder is an outlier even amongst heavyweights. I'm not sure there's ever been another heavyweight in any era with the same kind of one-shot game-over punch that Wilder has.
How come fighters in lower divisions can't rely on pure power alone like Wilder?

Julian Jackson relied on power in a lower division.
So did Randall Bailey.
To name just two. There are countless examples.Comment

To be fair Ortiz has much better than average technical ability hes a very solid boxer and really good win (2X) on wilders resume. This current Heavyweight division is crap. Its highly competitive so it makes it exciting but technical ability wise its weak. Wilder is pretty much the Heavyweight Breidis Prescott but in this division he can get away with it. Technical ability in the lower divisions is of a higher standard where 1 trick ponies get easily exposed. At heavy these are big slow men with average technical ability. Its more like target practice for Wilder. All the best names at this weight Wilder has avoided.
Keep in mind Ortiz is lefty so wilder will parry/catch ortiz jab and shoot his rightComment

I'd like to see how Wilder would handle being knocked down hard (no slip or flash). If he pulls through like Andy or is confused like AJ.Comment

First heavyweights can't risk fighting like lower weight fighters who can afford to get clipped every so often. Plus Wilder has power in that 1-2 that doesn't compare to lighter weight fighters. It is a true fight ender.
Wilder is not the most technical but he is skilled enough to avoid being with with a big shot. He is really passive at times and doesn't do much but that is a smart thing to do because it limits him getting caught solid since he is not the most technical.Comment

I think it’s a case of how much punch power a person can take and i think even though his opponents are of similar size, i think its right up there on how much punch power a person can take.
You would think it’s all relative to size, but i don’t think so, it’s not that simple. I don’t think a 122lbs man punching another 122lbs man has the same effect as a 250lbs man hitting someone his size.
If it was all relative, then womens boxing wouldn’t have such low KO %’s, but they do because i don’t think most of the women have enough punch power to knock out another human being as often, even if it’s another woman. Although you could argue the punching technique is lacking in a lot of womens boxing too.
There’s always exceptions of course, but generally speaking i think this is about right.Comment
