chavez was a giant middleweight and he beat andy lee to get his ranking. Lee wasn't a great talent by any stretch, but he was under emanuel steward [an hbo employee at the time,] and he had a push from HBO when his career was attempting to take off. chavez had also destroyed marco antonio rubio, who beat david lemiuex who was one of highest rated prospects in boxing at the time, appropriately or not.
the fight "made more sense" than would appear in 2019 when you look back. chavez brought in a ton of money, and martinez didn't break into the big time until he was middle aged. he actually did ok in teh fight as well, he was so big that martinez had a hard time keeping him away at his advanced age, and he caught up in the 12th and almost stopped him.
