Promoters pressure these orgs to make all these bs belts so that they can have more fights designated as 'championship' fights. They do this because people pay more attention when it's for a 'championship', but in the long run they dilute the meaning of this phrase and damage the sport's credibility.

Basically it's a sorta honourary title that can't be won in the ring but only awarded by the WBC that doesn't come with any mandatory requirements attached. You get beat, you keep your title and the poor sap that beat you may (and it's optional on behalf of the WBC) get a Diamond title which basically makes them a mandatory to the now worthless 'World' title.

Seriously, man. You couldn't make it up.

Don't be fooled by the idea that it's honourary - since the WBC are giving it to the cash cows and elite fighters it becomes the highest title pretty much by default and renders the World title obsolete and to all intents and purposes meaningless in those divisions where a 'franchise' champ is operating.

And in this case it's a little more than just wanting 'more' title fights I think. Arum was one of the few who came out and said it was a good idea when the WBC annointed Canelo, said it stands in the way of making the 'best' (read 'most profitable' I guess) fights when you gotta keep fighting mandos basically. For me that entirely misses the point of what the sports all about, but then I ain't the one making $ millions putting these fights together.

Haney seems like he prefers winning his titles in back room deals.

He'll most likely have another fight after the one on the youtuber card. Probably around the same time Loma fights the Lopez vs Commey winner.

Commey is Lopez's first real fight, man. He hasn't done much himself. And the article says Top Rank pursued the Franchise status for Lomachenko. Seems a bit beyond Haney's control that he's been elevated.

So i thought making another orgs champion mandatory for a vacant belt without ever competing in a WBC sanctioned bout was sketchy, now they award him franchise status without defending it once and destroy the morsel of credibility they had left.
It will only take a few more weight classes and they will kill any notion of undisputed champions

Yep this is pure crap. I had huge respect for Loma and love watching him fight but this decision stinks and he deserves whatever flack he gets for it.
