How is it a hit piece? I didn't discredit the final number, noted its improvement from the last ESPN card and also from Beterbiev's previous network performance, all while offering alibis in the form of stronger sports competition (Yankees-Astros). This after we ran stories on the main event all last week (I wrote four stories alone on Beterbiev during that stretch).

If the exact same story was for a Showtime card, you'd claim a bias towards them.

Not true. That dude that beat Conor McGregor is from the same country as Beterbiev. Americans care about him

              That didn't happen overnight.

I am not sure what anyone was thinking would happen. Friday had a ton of competition and these two were well known among those on this and other boxing sites, but unknown among casual combat sports fans. The biggest problem was ESPN not accounting for the football game doing what football games do... run over.

Because they are unknown with zero fan base as these numbers confirm. Canelo ducks no one. Canelo will beat these numbers easily while fighting on a mostly unknown app. Bow down to the cash cow.
Yeah, and Rocky fielding was an amazing draw when Canelo faced him for a paper title right? Gotta love when fans make lame excuses for a fighters selective choice of opponents. These numbers are actually indicative of the problem with boxing. There aren't enough real boxing fans anymore. There are too many groupies of certain fighters who mainly support them out of allegiance to race/nationality. So a great fight like this one will only do mediocre numbers because groupie casuals don't have interest unless it's someone they feel gives them nationalistic bragging rights. See Pacquiao, Canelo and Joshua fans as perfect examples.

I agree but it didn’t help when I had to wait for a SHT college football game to end before they put the fight on. Most people wouldn’t of known to keep checking.

Not bad numbers considering the context. Also, there is now a buzz surrounding Beterbiev. His next fight on ESPN tv network will do similar or better numbers
