Canelo should move on from ggg as there are greater (and much younger) challenges available. But where he's mistaken is in thinking that he ever proved any sort of clarity in his rival vs ggg. What real boxing fans will remember is that he got a gift draw in the first fight and won a close decision in the 2nd that could of gone either way. At 28 yrs old, he was never able to prove he was superior to a 36 yr old fighter who he and his fans have always referred to as a limited hype job.

Right now the rivalry stands about even with neither fighter dominanting the 2 previous fights.
Golovkin looked vulnerable in his last fight and Canelo could possibly beat GGG decisively.
A dominant win or a KO of a fighter some consider to be the top MW of his era would add more to his legacy than a win over Kovalev. Avoiding the 3rd fight shows Canelo still considers Golovkin a threat.
