An older interview by Kathy Duva said (it was on a podcast somewhere in July maybe early august, possibly chris mannix SI podcast, possibly everlast podcast michael woods or something I forget) she thought Canelo wanted the fight, but not GBP, and GBP was stalling. She said they took forever to finally make a fair offer, then finally made one literally one day after the deadline to pull out of the Yarde fight deal with the Russian promoters.

That was the most specific info, at least claim, I ever heard about it.

Then the Yarde fight happened, and Kovalev started saying in interviews that he is the one who turned down the Canelo fight because he didn't want to let down his hometown fans.

I don't know if that's just PR, or what.

In my opinion, most likely explanation is, what Duva said about the Russian promoters, and GBP stalling. Other most likely explanation in my opinion, but with zero inside info to confirm it, just my su****ion, is that GBP wanted the Yarde fight to happen so Kovalev could take damage, and so he would have to do VADA testing while Canelo did no testing, and so Kovalev would have to fight on short notice. And if GBP and Canelo weren't thinking like this, which they probably were, then I bet you had higher ups whether at DAZN, whether in Vegas, blocking things behind the scenes.

What I mean is, the idea to fight Kovalev is coming from Canelo and his trainer, specifically. They think it's a calculated risk legacy fight, and they're very high on Canelo after the GGG fight, and the Fielding fight. However, there are a lot more people who make money off Canelo than just Canelo and his trainer, and there are people with more distance from Canelo, more perspective, who are probably more objective. What I mean is, Rocky Fielding is not that good, #1. #2, everyone saw GGG vs Derevyanchenko. It's possible Canelo's team overrated GGG at this age, and overrated themselves in the process.

I'm not saying a 37 year old Kovalev on 10 weeks notice after a war will beat Canelo. No one knows how that will affect him but probably not good. And he's already shopworn. He already struggles to go 12 rounds vs basically anyone, now he has to do it vs a fast explosive body puncher in his prime....

So who knows. But certainly, I think it's a bigger risk for Canelo than everyone who makes money off him wanted to see, so perhaps they stepped in to mitigate that risk. If you saw Kovalev vs Yarde, you saw why. Kovalev on that night was actually still quite good, and he probably have beat up Canelo that night. But now you take a fighter whose punch resistance was already declining and you fight him 10 weeks after a war with a big puncher, that's probably cutting the risk in half it makes such a big difference.

So that's how I see it. There was a contract with a Russian promoter with a deadline, and by the time GBP, probably strategically, made a fair offer, it was too late to pull out. And the reason they did that, in my opinion, was for the reasons described. In fact their #1 goal was probably to just force Canelo to fight someone else instead because Kovalev would not be available anymore, but Canelo called their bluff and decided to wait. So instead, at least they weakened Kovalev, and gave Canelo a window to cycle PEDs while Kovalev had no such window because he was in VADA for Yarde. And maybe as I said, Vegas or other groups invested in Canelo tried to block it for the same reason as GBP, they're more realistic about Canelo than he and his trainer are, they're honest about how past prime GGG is unlike Canelo and his trainer who want to believe they slayed the boogeyman.

That's my opinion. Hope this was helpful.

Canelo is on record saying that he will weight 175lbs and is putting on muscle mass.

If this is true Canelo will probably never fight at the 160lb limit ever again and will have a HUGE advantage over GGG if the fight gets made. To add to what you're saying I'd bet you that GGG vs Canelo 3 happens at 168lbs if it ever does.

As much as Canelo says he wasnt cornered by DAZN to fight GGG that's a lie. They gave him two options which was GGG or Kovalev. They didnt want GGG on neutral turf so just like you said they chose the latter.

This way if Canelo ever is forced to fight GGG, Canelo still holds the cards because hell say, I cannot make 160 anymore. If GGG wants the fight it has to be at 168. This is after no VADA and time to put on the mass before GGG can.

Under these circumstances GGG would have to put on more mass ASAP and be behind Canelo as Canelo has already had months to prepare.

Smart business move but shady as f.uck.

The guy is moving up to 175 and planning to come in at the weight limit but he's just a SW according to some of his more enthusiastic fans. That aside I don't think coming in that heavy is a good strategy.
