What constitutes a 'robbery'?

With the fight last night, I thought I would ask how some on here would sum up what constitutes a robbery in boxing.

Seems like an obvious question...but I am curious as to how some on here score fights.

For me, a robbery is when I just cannot see a way to the guy getting the number of rounds needed to win, and that guy is given the victory.

I think in most fights a couple round spread is acceptable...there are generally 6-8 close rounds in a fight, and if you shade them 5-3 either way, then that could turn a 7-5 fight one way, into a 7-5 fight the other way...having a 'could go either way' fight happens about 5% of the time imo...95% of the time there is a clear winner, and only 1 winner.

I don't really see how people are saying Porter got 'robbed'...I gave him 6 rounds and I felt generous doing so...maybe he could have gotten to 7 rounds...but I think Spence could have won 7-8 rounds as well...that was an awkward fight to score for sure, as the aggressor was maybe not always landing more/cleaner shots.

Basically I just scratch my head at what we all consider robberies...I feel like I have seen quite a few in recent years...and I cannot even really take seriously the other side if they feel the guy who won did so legit...yet others swear Porter was robbed here, or Manny was robbed vs Horn, and I didn't see either of those happen.

Robbery contrary to section 8(1) of the Theft Act 1968 is an offence that can be tried only on indictment. The maximum penalty on conviction is imprisonment for life.

The offence is committed when a person steals and immediately before or at the time of doing so, and in order to do so, he uses force on any person, or puts or seeks to put any person in fear of being then and there subject to force.

The force or threats must be directed at the victim ('uses force on any person') and not, for example, at others or at the victim's property. In such circumstances it may be appropriate to consider an offence of blackmail.

Where, therefore, a theft follows or is followed by an assault, there may need to be two separate charges.

If the theft is completed before the assault takes place then robbery cannot be proved, because of the requirement that the force must be used 'in order' to steal. This can be determined only on the facts of each case.

If a theft takes place after an assault it will be a matter of fact for the tribunal of fact to determine whether the force was used 'in order' to steal. In the case of R v Harris (The Times 4 March 1988), the defendant was not guilty of robbery, by stealing from the victim who had been rendered powerless by others without the complicity of the defendant.

When a firearm (or imitation) is carried or used during the course of a robbery, appropriate charges under the Firearms Act 1968 or should always be added to the indictment in addition to a charge of robbery. Charges concerning the carrying or use of offensive weapons should similarly be added to the indictment.

The additional charges are important for sentencing purposes in respect of both the current and future cases and also to ensure that the record of previous convictions shows clearly the use of a firearm or other weapon.

Yes I have to say that 8 rounds for Porter seems very very favorable...and would be a 'robbery' card...was a hard to score fight as you said, but Spence was in most of the rounds so to get to 8 for Shawn is just wide imo

What constitute a robbery is a close fight in which the fighter you were rooting for loses. At least that’s what a robbery is to casual fans.

A real robbery is someone winning 8-10 rounds CLEARLY and still not getting the decision. A fight that comes to mind is Pernell Whitaker vs Julio Cesar Chavez

Spence-Porter was not a robbery. It was just a close fight but the right man got the decision.

Mattice-Zhora on Shobox earlier this year was not only the worst of this year, but might be the biggest robbery of the past 20 years.
This fight was a real robbery with no ski masks.

Yeah it's always a bit strange looking at how some score fights...and then you come across their other posts and they are big fans of the guy they have winning, or really hate the guy who they have losing...just coincidence I guess.

I never watched that one...I do feel it is very hard to have 8-10 clear rounds for 1 guy in a 12 round fight between 2 top guys..but I have heard rumors about that fight so not saying you are wrong about the robbery designation.

Generally I feel there are about half clear rounds and half close rounds in a fight at the top level...imo a robbery is when the close rounds are like 5-1 or so in favor or one guy...and then the other guy gets the other six close rounds, or even one of the other guy's clear rounds, and gets the W.

There are certain judges that consistently call it for certain promotions fighters or sanctions, if someone was to do some research it might be possible to pin point, but often you can tell when a judge is completely unknown and is never involved in a match again,,,, with that said, I think if has been rate that a fighter dominates and is robbed by a ****ty score, I figure if you focus on it too much it can take the enjoyment out of the game in my opinion
