he had a good left hook but thats all he threw and when you know a guy is coming after you with ONE punch, litereally ONE punch, its not hard to defend against (hold your right to your chin like its stuck there with glue and jab jab jab). combine that with the fact that tua was a progressively slow starter, ran out of ideas once his left hook failed to find its mark, was only five foot nine, and had a bad habit of gaining EIGHTY pounds between fights and you have a mediocre fighter who is listed along with other also-rans of promise who never panned out.
well, if you look at the only people he lost to or should have lost to (Rahman both times), Lewis, Ibeabuchi, and Byrd, you can see that it took a really special fighter to beat him. who cares how much skill he had? his chin was the best in the history of boxing and his left hook could put anybody to sleep. Ibeabuchi was just like Tua except his skills were sharper, which is why he beat Tua. Byrd and Lewis were GREAT boxers and put it on Tua for relatively easy decision wins. Rahman outboxed him twice and got a bull**** KO loss and a draw. Other than that, Tua has KO'ed tough competition (Ruiz, Moorer, etc). He was a really solid heavyweight, but unfortunately in Lewis' era, and Lewis is one of the top 6-7 heavyweights ever.
Tua may have one lethal weapon but he has enough experience to bring down hat glove from their chin to expose them to a left hook. His right hand has also put some asses on the canvas as well. Too bad Tua got stuck trying to KO Lewis' glass chin and never went for the body.
There was news earlier this year in January about a Tua-Brock fight in the works; however as you all know, that fight never panned out.
Fast forward 5 months later, with Brock coming off an uninspiring performance against Timor Ibragimov and Tua back on the comeback trail, how much of a possibility is this fight?
This fight would be very interesting because of the implications for both these fighters. Tua's a fan favorite who has incredible knockout power and ability while Calvin Brock is seen as the number 1 contender in the heavyweight division looking to make his mark and get a title shot.
If the promoters and fighters can get this made, this would be a great fan fight along with the Toney-Peter later this year.
Tua vs Brock...depending on which side you're on, it's a good fight for Brock coz this will catapult his career if he wins while Tua, if he loses - is a huge setback for his. If Tua wins, he doesn't get all that much more popular than he was before except to a few die hard boxing fans.
