You could say canelo is avoiding the better super middles/light heavies and the 3rd fight with ggg too. There are similarities between pac fighting Thurman and canelo picking kovalev. I give canelo credit if there’s no weight stipulations, because it’s still dangerous to move up to 175...but if you wanna nitpick, be consistent.

-400 favorite ... daring to be great. 50/50 or fights where he wouldn't be the favorite is daring to be great.

How is their similarities? Canelo is moving up 2 divisions to fight a champ and one of the biggest punchers in the sport. Pacquiao fought someone in his own division.

It’s more about the perception of who the biggest challenge is in relation to who they fought. A prime canelo is far more formidable than a 40 year old pac...canelo is considered the best in his division, pac not so much. There is no Spence or Crawford for canelo in his own division. You could say for canelo, they’d be callum smith or bivol and the horn rematch could be ggg lol...even though ggg is obviously better, but horn gave pac a tough close fight nonetheless. Pac selected a titlest in Thurman that arguably was the weakest of the bunch with his inactivity/injuries...canelo selected kovalev, who’s also arguably the weakest of the bunch, being past his prime and having been stopped twice and in big trouble in his last fight. The writing is on the wall...kovalev isn’t suddenly gonna be in his prime again vs canelo. Like I said, props to canelo...but you can’t blow your load over this fight and **** on a 40 yr old pac for fighting Thurman instead of Crawford.

Great at what? Kovalev is 36 and has lost 3 of his last 7 fights, 2 of which were by stoppage. If Canelo truly dared to be great, he would have fought "Krusher" when he was knocking everyone out.

he's taking on a challenge, but let's not act like it's not highly calculated. kovalev has been showing his age for a while now. anthony freaking yarde had him on ***** street. canelo is in his prime and his speed is going to give kovalev a lot of problems. he has power, he's a great body and combination puncher, and he's very accurate. he does for 12 rounds what yarde wishes he could do for 25 seconds each round.

styles make fights, and they have determined that kovalev is ripe for the picking. they won't go after any of the younger guys at 175, expect alvarez to go back down to middleweight or 168 lbs and stay there.

Kovalev is a far more dangerous fight than Thurman was. Canelo is moving up two divisions. He's at a massive disadvantage which wasn't the case in Pacquiao-Thurman.

Thurman was clearly bigger than Pacquiao.

I’m not sure that kovalev is more dangerous to canelo than Thurman was to pac. Kovalev is close to shot imo...canelo is at his absolute peak. We’ll see how canelo looks as a lhw and if there turns out to be any weight stipulations. Not to mention that kovalev has to get right back in camp after a tough fight...not ideal for a guy in the back half of his 30s. Won’t be surprised if kovalev has an injury in camp...certainly won’t be surprised when he gases half way into the fight. There’s definitely a risk in facing a bigger opponent, but canelo is not fighting pre ward kovalev here.

Pac being 40 years old alone makes the risk comparable...odds also opened with pac as a slight underdog, where canelo is 4:1 favourite.
