Yes he chose Vanes because he didn't want to give up the May 5th fight date and Sergei Derevechenko wouldn't agree the chump change for the bout that HBO was willing to pay. Sergei could have chosen to sit back and wait for his guaranteed shot at the winner of GGG or Canelo but he chose to push the issue, got GGG stripped and wound up losing his 0 to a guy who lost to GGG instead of the GGG/Canelo winner.
