I don't agree that Andrade, Charlo or a belt at 168 would erase much of that. Canelo is well on his way to being one of "the guys" of this generation of boxing. Guys who were both box office stars and who beat top quality opposition. That's not Charlo, Andrade or any of the guys at 168.
I think GGG is a sure fire hall of famer and could strengthen his case even more so with victories over those guys or maybe a belt at 168 but none of that moves the needle anywhere near as much as a win over Canelo. GGG would be a career defining fight for those guys. It wouldn't be the same if you looked at it from GGG's perspective. I still want to see those fights though.
Right now GGG will be remembered for not fighting Ward and leaving the ring with a beat up face versus Alvarez. No defining win or moment. Just a lot of TKOs vs overmatched opponents and a solid win vs Jacobs.

He also be remembered for 23 consecutive KO's.
The diva will be remembered for his "I don't like him" reason for refusing a trilogy fight. :-)

He had the backing of HBO and would have allowed GGG to make more money than he had at that point. It was denied to him.
It was so much of a duck Abel Sanchez had to sweep up the feathers before GGG signed Cotto's check. Cotto/Canelo would have happened whether GGG took the payoff or not. GGG just made the smart decision to take the paycheck and hope the winner fights him next rather than deny the paycheck and fight for less money for a vacant belt. Something Sergei D refused to do and as a reward he got to lose is 0 to Danny Jacobs for less.
He tossed a belt in the trash rather than fight him. Just because he fought him a few years later doesn't mean he didn't duck him. I don't think Ward had a big enough name for anyone to remember him not getting a chance to beat GGG (I do think he would have won). Ward was respected by hardcore fans. He never really crossed over.
thinks that Golovkin had a big enough name to command Cotto
but doesn't think Ward had a big enough name to command Golovkin
o, k, then... that about sums up G's faithful fanbase

2. If you're a mando and you take step aside...there is no duck. All the woulda done this or that goes out the tub with the bath water. You can't make a smart DECISION to get ducked.
3. More so than Martinez, Ward had the backing of HBO. So somehow the logic for Sturm and Martinez gets thrown out the window when it comes to Ward. Hardcores, which drive how fighters are viewed in boxing history, know GGG decided fighting Ward wasn't good for his 0. FYI, Ward didn't miss a chance to beat GGG, GGG missed a chance to cement himself in history as a warrior. Ward's legacy was set before GGG and Sanchez lied about 154-168.

So GGG was left in a position where he either take the cash and keep his place as the mandatory for a major boxing star or force the mandatory, don't get any of the cash and fight for less money for a vacant belt.

Unless you're going to make the argument that Cotto would have fought GGG instead of Canelo if GGG didn't take the step aside money I don't see how you can argue GGG wasn't ducked.Everyone knows Cotto would have just dropped the belt to make the fight with Canelo happen if GGG wouldn't step aside and we all know he left middleweight the second he lost that belt. When GGG was looking for a fight with Martinez both guys were actively fighting. Ward did most of his talking about a fight with GGG from the sidelines. He was inactive. And lets not forget that for all his "HBO backing" he headlined a card on BET.
2. Would have ducked and ducked are two different things. GGG made a call...he effectively prevented Cotto from ducking.
3. Wrong. The majority of the talk was in 2015 and 2016 after Ward's comeback vs Smith. Further, the BET fight was a one off, with an HBO deal struck right afterward. Ward was not on the sidelines when he went on ESPN and told GGG people to send a contract.
