Yes he could vacate the WBO, but that move is risky for a guy like Tony whose sole bargaining chip lies in that belt. 12 months is way too long...this fight has got to go down faster than that unless Floyd is able to get other equally challenging fights before then (Cotto/Hatton/etc.).
So did Mayweather officially duck Margarito now that it's over?

He wanted to fight Shane or DLH or Hatton but they didn't want the fight. I wouldn't say these guys are ducking Floyd. The simple fact is that BIG fights are hard to make in professional boxing for many reasons. Money, Risk, Titles, Promoters etc. Margarito may not be able to get somebody to fight him to increase exposure, but he can offer things Floyd can't. Margarito holds a title and Margarito can justify fighting for less money. For example, if Margarito pushes hard and agrees to take less money than Floyd or Hatton against Baldomir, he could probably get that fight. Furthermore what about the contenders that want to fight him like Williams or Quintana. What about a former titlist looking to regain a title like Zab or Collazo. Face it all boxers control their own careers and can be accused of ducking or avoiding somebody.Comment

The money was there, everything was there for the taking for Mayweather and he didnt take it.
FEAR to me is the best explanation of why he refused.Comment

I hate to bring race into this, but it seems that maybe u just dont like black fighters.
Mayorga beat Forrest to get his titles, and did so twice. Many people felt he was jobbed vs Spinks. Spinks is a good fighter but it's not some great accomplishment to beat him.Comment

People who are hating on Floyd wont stop. They'll find reason after excuse and more reasons to why he isn't as good as many think. All these arguments about Floyd ducking this guy, these guys duckign this guy. I've got a better idea. Stop worrying about Floyd... there's only 1 of him, and everybody wants a piece practically.
There are different weight classes and many different title holders who are worthy of your attention and need to get noticed in order to get some big fights. Cotto, Hatton, Margarito, etc etc etc.... Yet Floyd is the only one that matter somehow? There are other fights to be made, and instead of you people bitching about how Floyd won't fight them, ask them why they wont fight some of the other names on that list.Comment

Originally posted by amagninThe reason I say 12 months is that allows Floyd to unify against Baldomir in November. Fight Shane (if Shane is allowed) in February and fight DLH in May. Then he can fight whoever is left that he hasn't fought such as Hatton/Cotto/Margarito. My only question is why does Floyd have to fight Margarito on November 4th or be accused of ducking him?
Clearly Floyd is avoiding Tony right now. No one can dispute that. Now, will Floyd fight Tony later? Very possible. If Floyd takes the course of action you just mentioned then that is fine with me, but it will still have to be said that he ducked Tony for a while to take other fights he saw as more rewarding.
Business decision, 'ducking'...whatever you want to call it.Comment
