I don't think ggg was a cherry pick but I only used your logic. I also don't think Cotto or jacobs was a cherry pick for Canelo. I do think, canelo waited ggg out until he was older and less of a threat. He was still dangerous but not as dangerous as he would've been had Canelo taken the fight after he beat Cotto instead of dropping his belt to avoid him.

The earliest reasonable date that Canelo could have fought GGG was May 2016, after he beat Cotto to become the WBC lineal MW champion. GGG was 34 at that time. Canelo fought GGG on Sept 2017, a mear year and a half later. GGG was 35. Idk how much more dangerous he coulda been a year prior.
