  • Comments Thread For: Washington: I Just Wanted To Put It All Together Versus Helenius

For Gerald Washington, 2019 was supposed to be about returning to the title stage. However unlikely that may seem, he can at least comfort in returning to the win column. The 6'6" heavyweight from Vallejo, Calif. earned his first victory in more than a year, doing so in dramatic fashion Saturday evening in a one-punch 8th round knockout of Robert Helenius. The FS1-televised bout saw Washington begin to fade before landing a long right hand to put Finland's Helenius down and out for the night.

That’s was a highly entertaining fight that I had Helenius winning until the ko. I thought Helenius would win. Good look for Washington to stop someone win one shot that went to distance with Whyte. Washington got a shot at the title, that’s probably the pinnacle of his boxing career, that’s more than most fighters ever see and that’s saying a lot for a man that didn’t turn pro until what? 30? Well done to him and Helenius....that fight was proof that good matchmaking with lesser contenders can be better than the top guys fighting overly cautious. Damn PBC had some good fights last night

Wash&Hel both have no future in the HW division get KO’d every time they step up both have no stamina. Chubby Kownacki destroyed Wash. Joyce, Dubouis will use them to advance in rankings ko

***** Whyte couldnt even KO Helenious(who took the fight on 4 days notice and hadnt trained).

Im not sure dubois or joyce would beat either of them. Dubois / Joyce have fought no one.

I think we all understand there are levels in boxing. We all have our preferred way to look at fighters. I kind of have the elite or "A" level, "B" and then "C" level fighters, than club/scrub fighters. I am having a hard time figuring out Washington. He looks like a fringe "B" level at times, than others he looks like a "C" level, even in some of his wins. So I look at him against some of the HW division:

Do I favor him over Domonic Breazeale? Maybe slightly.
Joe Joyce? Actually, yes I do.
Daniel Dubois? Nah, I would pick Dubois. But I would say Washington might have a chance if he starts off well.
Dereck Chisora? No. I would pick Chisora.
Carlos Takam? No, but I think that would be a fun scrap and Washington is not out of his league.
Junior Fa? I think that is a fight Washington can win.

From there, though, Washington starts to lose pretty much against any other name in my opinion. Adam Kownacki. Kubrat Pulev. Alexander Povetkin. Michael Hunter. Joseph Parker. Hughie Fury. I mean does anyone really think he beats any of those guys?

He seems to be "C" level to me. This was a good win for him and a BAD loss for Helenius. It sets up Washington for at least 2 more nice payday fights, with a good chance for a big money fight if he pulls a couple upsets.

A couple more wins like that and Washington just might get himself out of gatekeeper status and back into title contention. It was a very nice win for him and I couldn't be more proud of him; Especially after that knockout loss to Adam Kownacki .
