The WBA themselves say he was defending the WBA super title. The belt he physically won in the ring was the super belt.
No, the WBA said in advance that Machado could only win the vacant world title, not the super championship. The physical belt was a super belt because when you win a title, the former champion allows you to pose with their belt because the organization mails your new belt at a later date.

The writer in the article you linked simply made a mistake. He's some random intern the WBA uses to generate web articles and surely you could understand even someone working for the WBA's site getting confused by all of the WBA's ridiculous championships.

This was posted on the WBA website the day before the fight:

Jezreel Corrales (22-1, 8KO’s) came in heavy at 133.25lbs at today’s weigh in in Verona, New York. Alberto Machado (18-0, 15KO’s) made weight at the super featherweight limit of 130.0lbs.

This means that the WBA Super Champion status is not on the line for tomorrow night. Should Machado win, he would become the regular WBA super featherweight champion.

Well, I missed this article, so fair point.

It just means the WBA didn’t make a decision way after the fight.

My main point still stands though, that the WBA have done Machado dirty here, unless he agreed in writing to the WBA a revised sanction, because the champion being stripped does not automatically affect his opponent should the fight still be sanctioned by the WBA

My guess, and I'm just an outsider speculating here, is that Corrales missed weight during the brief period where the WBA was legitimately trying to get rid of the super titles and interim titles, so they could just have the one world champion in each division.

Fast forward six months, when so many promoters, fighters, networks and managers had complained about the WBA eliminating titles, and the WBA appeared to just give up on getting rid of the super and interim titles. So when PBC pressured the WBA to sanction Tank for the vacant super title, they said sure.
