DAZN app nets 950% year-on-year revenue growth

Global sports over-the-top (OTT) platform DAZN has experienced marked growth in the past 12 months, and was the world’s top-grossing sports app in May, according to a study by the data analyst Sensor Tower.

Gross user spending across the month shows that the OTT service’s digital app brought in close to US$11.5 million in revenue – more than nine times its income for May 2018.

US subscribers represented 35 per cent of DAZN’s consumer-based revenue through its mobile app, while Japan made up 6.5 per cent of its market income. The Japanese service recently set a new viewership record as the men’s national soccer team took on Chile at Copa America.

DAZN has launched services in the US, Italy, Spain and Brazil since May 2018, which partially explains the revenue growth, particularly in the American market.

The streaming service’s income saw it top all sports app in the Sensor Tower’s study, which includes revenues from the iOS App Store and Google Play. The findings do not include revenue from Android stores in regions including China.

ESPN was the second highest grossing sports app worldwide last month with close to US$$4.7 million in user spending, which represents 5.6 times its revenues in May last year.

Almost three-quarters of that revenue came from the US, followed by Canada which represents 1.6 per cent of gross user spending on the ESPN app.

Meanwhile, Major League Baseball’s (MLB) MLB At The Bat and the National Basketball Association (NBA) apps also trailed behind DAZN’s, while onX Hunt, an offline GPS-driven app used for hunting, made up the top five for the month.

The revelation comes as DAZN announced that it has secured rights to the Chinese Super League (CSL) for the 2019 and 2020 seasons for its Italian service.

Did y'all even read the article?!??

Gross user spending across the month shows that the OTT service’s digital app brought in close to US$11.5 million in revenue...US subscribers represented 35 per cent of DAZN’s consumer-based revenue through its mobile app.

So in that monster month of May - with Canelo and Joshua if you timed it right - DAZN gross revenues were only $7.5 mill in U.S. and less than $11.5 mil worldwide, with DAZN receiving even less than that once the platform/app fees are deducted?!?!?!

You call that paying off? Canelo and Joshua fights cost over $40 million each, plus the cost of all the other boxing events, plus the cost of the baseball and Bellator deals, plus all that marketing...easily over $100 mil in costs for just that one month.

I'm no math wizard, but $100 mil in costs and less than $11.5 mil in revenues is not a good result. At that rate, an entire year's revenues would barely cover the cost of programming for just May.

              Yep

If they were smart they would have charged only yearly fee $100 in May I bet 80% of the same people would've paid it

Interesting post. Dazn will do better in the USA once if it’s able to obtain a major American sport like football.

No your an idiot. They didn't just make 11.5M in revenue for the month of May. lol this website that tracks downloads and information strictly on Apple Store and Google Play. This is only revenue from Apple store and Google Play that this website can track. The vast majority of the subscription revenue comes from people paying directly on DAZN website. Same with Netflix and the rest of the top apps. And even other app stores like Amazon and third party.

In 2018 alone DAZN generated approximately 277.6M in subscription revenue for the year.

DAZN’s revenue also increased by 136.2 per cent from 2017 to 2018, hitting US$277.6 million

That's over 23M a month in revenue for 2018 and they have already doubled their subscribers in 2019 comapred to 2018. Their revenue is likely over 50M. As a company DAZN has consistently doubled in revenue and subscribers consistently every year since they launched late 2016.

Is ESPN+ exclusively just boxing? Does ESPN “spend” budgets across its categories? And lastly, they came 2nd behind DAZN. Let me repeat... was ESPN+ revenue for the month of May just boxing?
